This random cartoon character generator deals five names at a time, from a silent-era cat of 1919 to the cast of a 2025 film. Under each name sits the cartoon it comes from, the year and a line on who they are. The list holds 508 characters from 198 series, films and runs of shorts.

Draw them from memory

Set the count to 1, press Start on the two-minute clock and sketch. Begin with the outline: character designers treat the silhouette as a character's most recognisable shape, so ears, hair and build matter more than the face. Afterwards, compare with the studio's model sheet, the reference drawing that keeps animators on model. Score a point each for outline, colours and the detail everybody forgot.

What the year and the chips mean

The year is when the named series first aired or the film opened. One row of chips sorts by that year, the other by screen: 350 characters from TV series and shorts, 158 from animated films. The rows combine, so 1990s plus From animated films draws only that decade's 26 film characters. Anime has its own page; video game characters, puppets and adults-only series are left out, while prime-time sitcoms such as The Simpsons are in. Last checked 18 September 2026.

Questions and answers

Why does an older character carry the show's year?

The year belongs to the series or film on the card. The Simpsons family first appeared in short sketches on a variety show in April 1987, but the half-hour series began in 1989, so all five carry 1989. Only stars of theatrical shorts are dated by their first cartoon.

Does this work as a random cartoon generator?

Yes. Every card names its cartoon first, with the year, and the list covers 198 of them. Set the count to 1 and that cartoon is your pick. No franchise has more than five names, spin-offs included, so one show never fills a draw. For live-action series too, use the random TV show generator.

How do I pick a random cartoon character without a picture giving it away?

There are none here. The characters belong to their studios and we have no right to show their artwork, so each result is text: a name, the show, the year and a line we wrote.
