Cherry tomatoes and mozzarella Cherry tomatoes and small mozzarella balls with olive oil, salt and a torn basil leaf.
Corn on the cob An ear of sweet corn boiled or microwaved, rolled in butter and salted.
Coxinha A Brazilian snack from São Paulo: shredded chicken in dough, shaped like a teardrop, battered and fried.
Crispbread with cream cheese Flat, dry rye bread with a long tradition in Sweden, Finland and Norway, spread with cream cheese.
Croquetas Deep-fried rolls with a thick béchamel centre. French in origin, most at home in Spain.
Cucumber with tzatziki Tzatziki is strained yogurt with cucumber, garlic and olive oil. Dip more cucumber in it.
Curry fish balls Fish balls are one of Hong Kong's representative street foods, eaten plain or in a curry sauce.
Devilled eggs Hard-boiled eggs halved, the yolks mashed with mayonnaise and mustard and spooned back in.
Dhokla A savoury steamed sponge of fermented rice and gram batter from Gujarat, eaten across India.
Dill pickle A small cucumber pickled in brine or vinegar. In Britain and Ireland it is called a gherkin.
Dolma Vine leaves wrapped round rice, herbs and spices, from the family of stuffed dishes of Ottoman cuisine.
Edamame An East Asian dish: immature soybeans boiled or steamed in the pod and salted. Squeeze the beans out.
Esquites Mexican corn in a cup: boiled kernels topped with lime juice, chili powder, Cotija cheese and mayonnaise.
Garlic bread Crusty bread spread with garlic butter and herbs, baked until the edges crisp.
Grissini Pencil-sized sticks of crisp bread from Turin, where they are thought to date from before 1643.
Guacamole and tortilla chips An avocado dip first developed in Mexico, mashed with lime and salt. Five minutes with a fork.
Halloumi fries Halloumi comes from Cyprus and has a high melting point, so sticks of it fry without collapsing.
Ham and cheese roll-ups A slice of ham rolled round a stick of cheese, with mustard if you like it.
Handful of almonds Whole almonds with their skins on. Toast them in a dry pan for two minutes if you have the patience.
Hard pretzels Small baked pretzel knots and sticks, salted and dry enough to keep for weeks.
Hard-boiled egg Boil a few at once and keep them in the fridge. Peel, halve, and add salt and pepper.
Instant noodles Invented by Momofuku Ando in Japan and launched in 1958. A kettle and about three minutes.
Kelewele Ghana's spiced fried plantain, often served beside red red, a stew of black-eyed peas.
Lumpia Spring rolls of the Philippines and Indonesia, in a thin, crêpe-like pastry skin.
Meat pie A handheld pie of minced or diced meat and gravy, eaten in Australia and New Zealand.
Mixed nuts Almonds, cashews, hazelnuts and whatever else is in the bag. The Brazil nuts go last.
Mozzarella sticks Breaded mozzarella, fried and served with marinara sauce for dipping.
Murukku A crunchy fried twist of rice flour and urad dal flour. The Tamil name means twisting.
Oatcakes with cheese Oatcakes have been a mainstay of Scottish baking for centuries. Top with a slice of sharp cheese.
Olives About a fifth of the olive harvest is cured and eaten as table olives; the rest is pressed for oil.
Onion rings Rings of onion dipped in batter or breadcrumbs and deep-fried.
Pakora From the Indian subcontinent: vegetables such as potato and onion in seasoned gram flour batter, fried.
Patatas bravas Fried cubes of potato under a spicy brava sauce, a dish native to Spain.
Pirozhki Russian yeast buns, baked or fried, filled with ground meat, mashed potato, mushrooms or cabbage.
Pistachios The shell splits open by itself as the nut ripens. Shelling them one at a time slows you down.
Popcorn A kernel is 14 to 20% water. Heat turns it to steam and the hull bursts. Five minutes in a lidded pan.
Pork pie An English pie of chopped pork in hot water crust pastry, usually eaten at room temperature.
Pork scratchings The British name for deep-fried, salted, crunchy pork rind, eaten cold from the bag.
Potato chips Thin slices of potato fried until they snap, salted, and eaten from the bag.
Prawn crackers Deep-fried crackers of starch and prawn, eaten across Southeast Asia. Indonesia calls them krupuk udang.
Pumpkin seeds Also called pepitas, from the Mexican Spanish for little seed of squash. Eaten roasted.
Radishes with butter and salt Whole radishes dragged through soft butter and dipped in flaky salt.
Rice cakes with peanut butter Puffed rice cakes spread thick with peanut butter. Add sliced banana if there is one.
Roasted chestnuts A street food of autumn and winter in East Asia, Europe, New York City and Istanbul.
Roasted chickpeas Roasted until dry and crunchy. As leblebi they are a common snack from Turkey and Greece to Iran.
Roasted seaweed sheets Gim, Korean dried seaweed, roasted with sesame oil. It comes as a stack of thin, crisp sheets.
Roasted sweet potato A street food of East Asian winters. In Korea they are roasted in drum cans and called gun-goguma.
Salted peanuts Roasted, salted, and gone faster than planned. Pour some into a bowl and put the bag away.
Sardines on crackers A tin of sardines in oil, forked onto crackers with a squeeze of lemon and black pepper.
Scallion pancake Cong you bing, a Chinese flatbread of wheat dough folded again and again round minced scallions.
Scotch egg A boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat, breadcrumbed and fried. One claim dates it to a London shop in 1738.
Senbei Japanese rice crackers, usually savoury, often brushed with soy sauce and sometimes wrapped in nori.
Soft pretzel A knot of dough treated with lye before baking, which gives the dark skin. German by origin.
Spanakopita A Greek pastry filled with chopped spinach, feta and egg.
Spoonful of peanut butter Ground dry-roasted peanuts, straight from the jar. The least effort on this list.
String cheese Mozzarella heated and stretched until its proteins line up, so it peels away in strings.
Sugar snap peas Eaten whole and raw, pod and all. Nothing to prepare beyond rinsing them.
Sunflower seeds Striped sunflower seeds are the snacking kind, sold roasted and salted in the hull.
Suya Hausa smoke-grilled meat on a skewer from Nigeria, sliced thin and coated in yaji, a peanut and chili mix.
Tequeños A spear of wheat dough wrapped round white cheese and fried. A popular snack in Venezuela.
Tortilla chips and salsa A bag of corn tortilla chips and a jar of tomato salsa. Both keep in the cupboard until opened.
Tostones Green plantain sliced and fried twice, found across Latin America and the Caribbean.
Wasabi peas Peas roasted or fried, then coated in wasabi powder. Japan calls the family wasabi-mame.

Apple chips Apple sliced thin and dried until it snaps, with nothing added but perhaps cinnamon.
Apple slices with peanut butter One apple cut into wedges, with a spoon of peanut butter for dipping.
Applesauce cup A purée of cooked apples, sold in single pots that keep in the cupboard.
Banana chips Slices of firm banana fried or dried until crisp. In Kerala plantain chips are fried in coconut oil.
Banana cue Deep-fried saba bananas coated in caramelised brown sugar, sold on bamboo skewers in the Philippines.
Box of raisins Dried grapes in a small box. They also go on celery, in porridge, or into a bag of nuts.
Caramel corn Popcorn in a hard caramel or molasses shell. Britain calls it toffee popcorn.
Chin chin A crunchy fried snack of wheat dough from Nigeria. Ghana calls it achomo.
Clementine segments Peels in one piece if you are careful. Two is a snack, four is a fruit course.
Cold watermelon wedge Cut from a melon that has spent the morning in the fridge. Eat it over the sink.
Dango Japanese dumplings of rice flour, served three to five on a skewer.
Dried apricots Chewy, sharp and sweet. Four or five is plenty.
Dry cereal by the handful Breakfast cereal straight from the box: no milk, no bowl, no washing up.
Egg waffle A Hong Kong street snack since the 1950s: eggy batter cooked between two plates of round cells.
Energy balls Dates, oats and nut butter blitzed and rolled into balls. No oven needed.
Fairy bread White bread, butter and sprinkles, cut into triangles. A children's party food in Australia and New Zealand.
Flapjack The British oat bar: rolled oats, brown sugar, butter and golden syrup, baked in a tin and cut into squares.
Frozen banana A banana frozen on a stick and dipped in chocolate. California's Balboa Peninsula had a stand by about 1940.
Frozen grapes Grapes washed, dried and frozen for a few hours. They eat like small sorbets.
Frozen yogurt bark Yogurt spread thin on a tray, scattered with berries, frozen, then snapped into pieces.
Fruit leather Fruit purée spread thin, dried into a sheet, cut into strips and rolled up.
Granola bar Rolled oats, nuts and honey or syrup pressed into a bar, made for pockets and lunch boxes.
Honey-roasted peanuts Peanuts roasted with honey, sugar and salt, so they are sweet and salty at once.
Ice pop Juice frozen round a stick. Make a batch at home in a mould, or keep a box in the freezer.
Jian dui Chinese sesame balls: fried glutinous rice pastry, crisp and chewy, filled with lotus or red bean paste.
Kettle corn Popcorn popped with sugar, salt and oil. Dutch settlers in Pennsylvania wrote of it in the 18th century.
Malt loaf A chewy, sticky loaf made with malt extract and raisins, sliced and spread with butter for tea.
Mango with chili and lime Chili, lime and salt on fruit is a classic combination in traditional Mexican cooking.
Microwave cinnamon apple A chopped apple with cinnamon and a little butter, microwaved for two minutes until soft.
Mochi Japanese rice cake: steamed glutinous rice pounded into a paste and shaped.
Pisang goreng Battered, deep-fried banana, a common snack in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Poffertjes Tiny puffed Dutch pancakes, raised with yeast and eaten with butter and powdered sugar.
Puff-puff Fried dough balls with a Nigerian name; Ghana calls them bofrot and Cameroon calls them beignets.
Rice pudding pot Rice cooked in milk with sugar. From a tin or a pot, it is good cold with a spoon of jam.
S'mores A toasted marshmallow and chocolate between graham crackers. US Girl Scouts made them by the mid-1920s.
Scone with jam and cream A cream tea is tea, scones, clotted cream and jam, sold in tea rooms across Devon and Cornwall.
Strawberries and cream Hulled strawberries with cold cream poured over. Sugar only if the berries need it.
Stuffed dates Dates stoned and stuffed with almonds or walnuts. Tahini and marzipan are other classic fillings.
Taiyaki A fish-shaped Japanese cake, most often filled with anko, sweet bean paste. First sold in 1909.
Toasted teacake In England, a light yeast bun with currants and peel, split, toasted and buttered.
Trail mix Nuts, dried fruit and sometimes chocolate, developed for hikes. New Zealand and Australia call it scroggin.
Turon A Philippine snack: saba banana rolled in a spring roll wrapper, fried and coated in caramelised sugar.
Welsh cakes Small, round, spiced cakes from Wales with currants, cooked on a griddle or bakestone.
Yogurt with honey and walnuts Thick strained yogurt with a spoon of honey and a few broken walnuts.

It draws one snack out of 120: nuts and seeds, things on crackers, fruit with something on it, bar food, and 65 snacks whose card names their home. From the cupboard holds 43 that keep at room temperature for weeks, such as sardines, stuffed dates and Bombay mix, so the draw is likely to be something you own. Around the world marks 65 snacks whose card says where they belong: kelewele in Ghana, tequeños in Venezuela, egg waffles in Hong Kong, poffertjes in the Netherlands. Instant noodles were launched in Japan in 1958, taiyaki was first sold in 1909, and Turin's breadsticks are thought to be older than 1643.

Questions and answers

What does Fruit, veg and nuts mean?

It marks snacks that are mostly fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds or pulses, and are neither deep-fried nor sugar-coated. So apple chips are in, and banana chips and honey-roasted peanuts are out. It is our own grading of what a snack is made of. It is not dietary advice, and the page makes no claim about what to eat.

Are the facts on the cards true?

Each place, date and name was read against the snack's English Wikipedia article on 18 September 2026, and the card keeps the article's caution. The Scotch egg's London story of 1738 is one claim among several, so the card calls it a claim. Origins we could not confirm were left off.

Can I combine two filters, such as Sweet and Crunchy?

Yes. Choose Sweet in the Either menu and Crunchy under More filters. That leaves 9 snacks, among them kettle corn, chin chin and apple chips. Add From the cupboard and 7 remain. A combination with nothing in it says so, and Show all clears every filter. The picker does not repeat a snack until it has been through every snack that fits.
