Random Anime Generator With Year, Studio, Episode Count and Premise: how it works

Press New anime and five titles appear, each with the year it began, the studio that animated it, the episode count where the run has ended, and one line on the premise. The list holds 369 series and 97 films, 466 titles in all, from a Toei Animation feature of 1958 to a series that aired in 2026.

Choose tonight's watch by length

Tap a genre chip, press the button and read the end of each line first. Japanese television runs in three-month blocks called cours, usually of 13 episodes, so 12 or 13 is one block and 24 to 26 is two. Here 72 series end within 13 episodes, 47 pass 100 and the longest has 1,787.

What the year, studio and count mean

The year is the first broadcast or release under that title. Two studios are named where they shared the work or split the seasons. Three rows of chips sort the list: era (134 titles before 2000, 124 from the 2000s, 208 since 2010), genre (Sci-fi and fantasy is the largest with 236) and format (369 series, 97 films). Last checked 18 September 2026.

Tips

  • Short on time? Tap Films: each of the 97 is one sitting.
  • Nothing here is adults-only, but war dramas and crime thrillers made for older teens and adults are in. Check the age rating.
  • For one title to talk about, use the daily pick: every visitor sees the same one that day. A shared link keeps your chips.

Questions and answers

Can the random anime generator pick by genre or decade?

Yes. Three chip rows combine: era, genre and format. Tap 2000s, Sci-fi and fantasy and Films and the draw comes from the 16 titles that are all three. The eras are before 2000, the 2000s, and the 2010s and 2020s together, so for one decade, read the year that starts each line.

Why does a long show have a low episode count, or none?

The count comes from the infobox of the title's Wikipedia article. Where later seasons are listed as separate series, it covers the first run only, which is why Code Geass shows 25. A show still airing, or with a new season announced, prints no count.

Why is a title missing, and where are the pictures?

No franchise has more than five entries, sequels and films included. Adults-only titles are left out, and so are titles led by fan service or gore; that is our judgement, not a rating, and action series with violent scenes are in. In September 2026 the list was cut to the 466 titles best known outside Japan. Animation made elsewhere is on the random cartoon character generator. Artwork belongs to the studios, so results are text.

How this list was compiled: List chosen and every one-line premise written for this site; nothing is copied from Wikipedia, a fan wiki or a studio page. Each title's year, studio and episode count were read on 2026-09-18 from the infobox of its own English Wikipedia article (index page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_anime; each entry was checked on the article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ plus the title, read through the Wikipedia API), and each premise was checked against the lead and plot sections of the same article; a detail we could not find there was cut. Year rule: the first broadcast or release the infobox lists for the first series or film under that title, so a show with later seasons is dated by its first. Studio rule: the animation studios the infobox lists, the first two at most; where two studios made different seasons, both are named. Episode rule: the count the infobox gives for that series, which covers the first run only where the article lists later seasons as separate series; no count is printed for a show still airing, a show with episodes or an announced new season dated 2026 or later, or a show whose article gives two different figures, and the count is dropped from the line (but kept in the data) where two long studio names leave no room. The Series chip also holds 9 video series and 3 web series; the Films chip holds 96 cinema films and 1 television film. Left out on purpose: adults-only titles, titles led by fan service or gore (our judgement, not an official rating: action series with violent scenes are in, and some films here carry an R rating in the United States, such as Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon_Slayer:_Kimetsu_no_Yaiba_–_The_Movie:_Mugen_Train), works not animated in Japan, titles whose article has no usable series infobox, and anything past 5 entries for one franchise, counting sequels, remakes and films together. On 2026-09-18 the list was shortened from 556 to 466 titles to keep the page light: the 90 cut were those whose English Wikipedia article, or the article of their franchise, exists in 11 or fewer other languages (read from the Wikipedia API that day), a rough sign that a title is hard to find outside Japan; 13 well-known titles whose count is low only because Wikipedia splits them across several articles were kept. Text only: no artwork, logos or clips. Review interval: every 12 months, and sooner when a running show ends. Licence: own work
