    Town of the day

    How it works

This Russian town name generator joins a real Russian root to a real place-name ending. Tuman is fog and -ogorsk is built on gora, a mountain, so Tumanogorsk is a town on a foggy mountain.

    Read the full guide

    Press, then lock the ending

Press New town name. Tap the ending, press its padlock and press again: lock it on -ograd and every name ends like Volgograd. The list under the tool shows each root in Cyrillic with the word it comes from.

    How the two parts join

Most endings start with o, the vowel Russian uses to join two words into one: Aist, a stork, then o, then grad, a town, make Aistograd. Each ending is built on a plain word, such as more, the sea, in -omorsk.

    Tips
    • Fit the ending to your map: -omorsk needs a coast, -ozersk a lake, -ogorsk a mountain.
    • The result is in Latin letters. Copy the Cyrillic of each part from the list under the tool.

    Questions and answers

What does grad mean in Russian city names?

Grad is an old, poetic word for a town or city, used as a city name suffix, as in Volgograd and Kaliningrad. The everyday Russian word is gorod, as in Novgorod.

What does the ending -sk mean?

It is a suffix used in Russian place names. Here it closes endings built on a plain word: -ogorsk on gora, a mountain, -ovodsk on voda, water, and -ozersk on ozero, a lake.

    Are these real Russian towns?

No. Every join was checked, in Latin letters and in Cyrillic, against the GeoNames tables of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, and real ones were cut. Common roots such as Nov-, Krasn- and Bel- spell real towns, so the roots here are rarer.

How this list was compiled: 50 Russian roots, each in Latin letters with the root in Cyrillic, the dictionary word it comes from and that word's meaning. Every word and meaning was checked by script on 2026-10-03 against the Russian section of its English Wiktionary entry (for example https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/берёза; CC BY-SA 4.0). Roots that end in a soft or hushing consonant are left out, because they take the joining vowel e and not o. Every name the Opening and Ending rows can spell was checked that day, in Latin letters and in Cyrillic, against the GeoNames tables of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan with their alternate names (564,183 named places) and places of 500 people and up worldwide (https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0), against every list on this site, and as an exact page title on English Wikipedia; the part behind a match was cut. Everyday roots such as Nov-, Krasn- and Bel- spell real towns with most endings and are gone for that reason. 36 candidates were cut (30 a real place on the map; 5 that stood one letter from a well-known town; 1 a soft root), among them Bel, Berez, Bobr, Bolot, Chern, Chernik, Dobr and Granit, and in the finishing pass Sokol (Sokologorsk is the Russian form of the name of a city in Ukraine, which the tables hold only in its Ukrainian spelling), Golub (голубь ends in a soft consonant, and with o the root reads as light blue), and Belk, Volk, Vetr, Zhelez and Med (Belkomorsk, Volkograd, Vetrozavodsk, Zhelezogorsk and Medogorsk each stand one letter from a real town). How this list was compiled: 12 endings of real Russian place names, each with the word it is built on and a real town that carries it. The word and its meaning were checked by script on 2026-10-03 against the Russian section of its English Wiktionary entry (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/град, https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-ск and the entries for the other words; CC BY-SA 4.0), and each example town was found that day in the GeoNames tables of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine or Kazakhstan. Most endings begin with o, the vowel Russian uses to join two words into one (Wiktionary, -о-). The screen of the joined names is described in the Opening row's source.
