Read the full guide
Read it, say it, then tap
Press Pick 5 new Russian words. Read the Cyrillic aloud, leaning on the vowel with the mark, say the meaning, then tap Show meaning. The card gives the English meaning, the part of speech and a noun's gender. The Word type list under the button narrows the draw.
What the Latin reading shows
The reading is Wiktionary's transliteration. J is the y of you, č the ch of check, š the sh of hush, ž the s of measure and x the ch of loch. The mark ʹ softens the consonant before it, as at the end of чита́ть (čitátʹ). Where spelling misleads, the reading follows the sound: что is što.
Tips
Ordinary Russian print leaves the stress marks out; dictionaries and learner texts add them.

Questions and answers
Why does a Russian verb card name a partner?
A Russian verb is imperfective or perfective, and most have a partner of the other aspect. The card names the aspect and the partner listed in the verb's Wiktionary entry: чита́ть, to read, is imperfective and its perfective partner is прочита́ть.
How do I tell a Russian noun's gender?
The covered line says masculine, feminine or neuter, read from the noun's Wiktionary entry. Do not trust the ending alone: па́па ends in а and is masculine, and вре́мя ends in я and is neuter.
Where do the words, stress marks and readings come from?
The choice of words is ours, from no exam or course list. The stress mark, the Latin reading, the part of speech, the meaning and the gender each come from the word's own entry on English Wiktionary, read by script.

How this list was compiled: Everyday Russian words. Each word's spelling, part of speech and meaning come from its own entry on English Wiktionary (wikitext read through https://en.wiktionary.org/w/api.php on 2026-09-30, 40 titles to a request, text under CC BY-SA 4.0; the entry's address is in x.src), Russian section. The stress mark and the reading in Latin letters are the ones printed on the entry's headword line, read by expanding the entry's own headword template through the same API and never worked out by our script; the reading is Wiktionary's transliteration of Russian (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Russian_transliteration ), in which j is the y of yes, č is ch, š is sh, ž is the s of measure, x is the ch of loch and ʹ marks a soft consonant. Words of one syllable carry no stress mark, as on the entry. A noun's gender, a verb's aspect and its partner verb of the other aspect are read from the same headword line; where the line names two partners the first is given, and быть and стоить have none there. Деньги is plural only and кофе is given as masculine or neuter, as their entries say. The list is our own choice of everyday vocabulary and is copied from no exam body's or course's list. The English meanings are our own short wording; a script then checked that a word of each meaning stands in a definition line under the same part-of-speech heading of the entry, and words that failed were left out. Every English meaning was read for a school audience: no slang, insult, swear word, alcohol or adult term. After the file was written a script read it back and checked every row against the saved entry text again. Licence: own work
