Two alphabets on every card
Serbian is written in both Cyrillic and Latin, so a card prints both: Јелена, Jelena. Where a letter carries an accent mark the card adds the plain spelling, Miloš and Milos.
A meaning only where the dictionary has one
79 cards carry the line the dictionary gives: Vuk is from vuk, wolf, and Dragan from drag, dear. 36 give an English form, such as Nicholas for Nikola. The other cards say nothing.
19 cards are marked as among the ten most common names in Serbia's 2022 census, Dragan and Jelena among them.
Questions and answers
What are common Serbian names?
Dragan, Aleksandar and Milan for men and Jelena, Milica and Marija for women led the first names counted in Serbia's 2022 census, as English Wikipedia's list of popular given names reports it. All six are on this page and their cards say so.
Why do Serbian last names end in -ić?
The ending -ić is a Slavic diminutive that first made patronymics, so Petrović is the little son of Petar. Most Serbian surnames carry it. This page deals the ten most common family names as a sample; the Serbian last names page holds the long list.
Is Serbian written in Cyrillic or Latin?
Both. Serbian uses the Cyrillic and the Latin alphabet side by side, and each letter of one answers to a letter of the other. Every card prints the name both ways: Никола, Nikola.
Are these real Serbian names?
Yes. Every given name has an entry in English Wiktionary as a Serbo-Croatian given name and an article that English Wikipedia files under Serbian given names, read on 3 October 2026. No speaker of Serbian has read the list.

How this list was compiled: A list by a written rule, built on 3 October 2026 from public pages read that day. Given names: a name is listed when it has an entry as a Serbo-Croatian given name, in Latin letters, in English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Serbo-Croatian_given_names, CC BY-SA 4.0) and an article in English Wikipedia's category of Serbian masculine given names or of Serbian feminine given names (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Serbian_masculine_given_names and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Serbian_feminine_given_names): 180 men's and 63 women's names; Ljuba and Jasmina, which Wikipedia files under both categories, are listed once, as women's names. Serbia's 2022 census named the ten most common first names of men and of women (the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia's release, as English Wikipedia's 'List of most popular given names' reports it, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_popular_given_names); 19 of those 20 have a dictionary entry and are listed and marked, and one, Ljiljana, has none and is left out. The Latin spelling is the dictionary's entry title. The Cyrillic spelling is written letter for letter from the Latin one, as Serbian's two alphabets allow (lj, nj and dž are one letter each); for 61 names the dictionary also has an entry under exactly that Cyrillic spelling, and for the other 182 the spelling rests on the letters alone. 79 cards carry the first sentence of the entry's etymology, as the dictionary words it, kept only when it is short and names no reconstructed form; 36 carry the English form the entry gives. The other cards say nothing about a meaning. Family names: the ten most common surnames of the 2011 census, as this site's Serbian last names page lists them from English Wikipedia; a sample, since that page holds the long list. That most Serbian surnames end in -ić, and that the ending is a diminutive that first made patronymics (Petrović, 'little son of Petar'), is from English Wikipedia's 'Serbian name' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian_name); that Serbian is written in both the Cyrillic and the Latin alphabet is from its 'Serbian language'. 253 names in all; 44 carry a letter with an accent mark and their cards add the plain spelling. Serbo-Croatian is the dictionary's name for the shared language; a name listed here may also be used in neighboring countries. Single names only, never a real person. No speaker of Serbian has read the list. Licence: Drawn from English Wiktionary and English Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/). The census order is the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia's, as Wikipedia reports it, used only to mark names. The selection and the wording of the cards are our own work.
