What a Serbian surname is built on

The dropdown, Built on, keeps the 245 names from a father's first name (Jovanović, from Jovan), the 14 from a mother's (Katić, from Kata), the 43 from a trade, title or everyday word (Kovačević, from the word for a blacksmith) or the 26 from a place, a people or another name.

Endings

Under More filters, Ending keeps the 217 names in -ović or -ević, the 95 in -ić alone or the 13 with another ending, such as Kovač and Zec.

Tips
  • Katić, Nedić, Marić and Zorić are built on a mother's name; Wikipedia's article on Serbian names lists all four.
  • 263 cards print the Cyrillic form from the name's own article; the rest are spelled out letter for letter.

Questions and answers

What is the most common Serbian last name?

Jovanović. Petrović, Nikolić, Marković and Đorđević follow it among the ten most common surnames of Serbia's 2011 census, then Stojanović, Ilić, Stanković, Pavlović and Milošević.

Why do Serbian last names end in -ić?

The ending -ić is a Slavic diminutive that first made a name from a parent's name: Petrović is the little son of Petar. It often follows -ov or -ev, which mark possession, giving -ović and -ević.

What do Serbian last names mean?

Most are built on a parent's first name: Jovanović on Jovan, Nikolić on Nikola, Katić on Kata. Others come from a trade or a word: Kovačević from kovač, a blacksmith, and Terzić from terzija, a tailor.

Are these real Serbian surnames?

Yes. Each has an article among Wikipedia's surnames of Serbian origin, and its root comes from that article or from a dictionary entry. Many are also carried in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.

How this list was compiled: Built on 2 October 2026 from public pages read that day. One: the Serbia table of English Wikipedia's 'List of most common surnames in European countries' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_common_surnames_in_European_countries#Serbia), which gives the ten most common surnames of the 2011 census of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia in both alphabets with a gloss; all ten are here and their cards say so. Two: English Wiktionary's Serbo-Croatian surname entries (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Serbo-Croatian_surnames, CC BY-SA 4.0): where the entry's etymology names the word or first name the surname is built on, the card gives it, with the gloss the entry gives (104 cards). Three: the surname articles in English Wikipedia's category 'Surnames of Serbian origin' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Surnames_of_Serbian_origin, 1,238 pages that day): where an article's opening says which first name or word the surname comes from, the card gives that (221 cards). A name is listed only when it has an article in that category and one of these two sources states its root; names whose only stated root is an unkind word for a bodily trait, names whose root is a religious title (all but Popović, one of the census ten), names whose own article calls them a surname of another country and names no tie to Serbia, spellings adapted to English, and two names best known for one man were left out as our own call. The Cyrillic spelling is the one the name's article prints (263 names, with the ten of the census table); for the other names it is written letter for letter from the Latin spelling, as Serbian's two alphabets allow, and the two ways agree wherever an article prints the name. The sorting into what a name is built on follows the source: 'father' and 'mother' only where the dictionary files the surname as a patronymic or matronymic, the dictionary marks the first name as a man's or a woman's, or the article says so. The rule on the ending -ić was read in English Wikipedia's 'Serbian name' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian_name). A root is what a dictionary or encyclopedia records for the surname in general, not for any one family; many of these surnames are also carried in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. Counted on 2 October 2026: 7 of 325 names (2.2 in 100) also stand in another list of this site. The census order is the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia's, as Wikipedia reports it, used only to mark the ten names. The selection, the sorting and the wording of the cards are our own work.
