On your feet 8

Rings off, hair up, pockets empty

House rules at walls in Estonia and England ask for the same three things before you leave the ground: rings and watches off, long hair tied back, pockets emptied. US walls ask for the first two. One Estonian gym singles rings out, because a ring that gets caught can badly injure a finger. A wall run by a town in Virginia adds dangling earrings, long necklaces and large belt buckles to the list.

  • Squat low and step up onto a chair in the outfit at home. If nothing pulls or slips, it will climb.

Questions and answers

What should I wear first time climbing?

Sportswear that stretches: sweatpants or leggings and a T-shirt. One US gym chain says to think of gym class and to pick pants or shorts that need no belt. The gym rents the climbing shoes.

Should I wear socks with climbing shoes?

With rental shoes, yes: three US gyms ask or advise first-time visitors to wear socks with them. With shoes of your own it is up to you, and none of these gyms sets a rule.

What should I wear for outdoor rock climbing?

Quick-drying layers. One US guide service lists an athletic T-shirt, synthetic pants or shorts, a fleece, a rain jacket and closed-toe shoes. It brings the helmet and harness for you.

Can I wear jeans rock climbing?

Indoors, only if they stretch: one gym chain’s guide says tight jeans with no give are best left at home. Outdoors, one guide service rules out jeans and cotton altogether.
