Shoes that turn 13

  • Clean indoor trainers What a London school suggests for a first class, with any smooth-soled shoe.
  • Dance sneakers A Brooklyn studio accepts them with a thin rubber or suede sole.

  • Suede-soled dance shoes, once you are hooked The upgrade studios suggest after a few classes. Never wear them on the street.

  • Everyday shoes you already own Comfortable ones are normally fine for a beginner class, one salsa school says.
  • Hair tie On a Miami studio’s list for anyone with longer hair.
  • Office clothes or gym clothes Either is fine, a British school says, as long as arms and legs move easily.
  • Ponytail, bun or braid Loose long hair whips a partner in a fast turn, a California studio warns.

How it works

Why the sole matters more than the outfit

Eight of the twelve studios warn against soles that grip: such a sole holds the foot still when the rest of you turns. A Miami studio gives a test to try at home. Stand on a smooth floor and pivot on the ball of one foot; if the shoe sticks, pick another pair. Suede soles come later, and a California studio says never to wear them outdoors, where dirt and damp spoil the suede. Partners change during a group class, which is why studios also ask for small jewelry, hair tied back and a light hand with scent.

  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, one salsa school suggests, so there is time to check in and change your shoes.

Questions and answers

What should I wear to my first salsa class?

Clothes you already own. The studios ask for a top you can lift your arms in, bottoms that stretch and everyday shoes with a smooth sole. Studios in Miami, London and Sydney say outright that dance shoes can wait until you know you like it.

Can you wear sneakers to a salsa class?

It depends on the sole. Studios in Miami, London and Orange County accept clean sneakers with a flat, smooth sole for a first class. A Napa studio rules out most sneakers, because their rubber soles are made to grip.

Can you wear jeans to a salsa class?

Yes, if they stretch. A Miami studio’s check is a small lunge: if the jeans hold you back, change. A London school accepts jeans that are not too tight, while studios in California and Sydney advise against thick, stiff denim.

Can you dance salsa in socks?

Studios disagree. A California studio says some men dance their first class in socks, which turn easily but give the foot less support. A Miami studio lists socks alone among the things to avoid, as too slippery.
