How it works

What should I wear to beginners ballet? Fitted clothes that stretch, ballet slippers and hair tied back. These 53 things follow fourteen ballet schools’ own dress codes, thirteen of which let adults skip the leotard.

Why schools want a close fit

Ballet clothes fit closely for a reason the schools give themselves: the teacher has to see how you are standing to correct it. A Texas ballet school asks adults to avoid anything loose enough to get in the way of that. A Massachusetts school gives hair the same logic: worn up, it shows the position of the neck and head.

  • Not sure what a class requires? A Texas ballet school asks students to contact its staff before they come. Ask yours the same.

Questions and answers

Do I need ballet shoes for my first class?

Often, yes. Schools in New York, Houston and Boston require slippers in every ballet class, and schools in Brooklyn and Atlanta only recommend them. Three let adults wear socks, at least for a first class. A London company allows bare feet and no socks.

Do adults have to wear a leotard to ballet?

Rarely. Of the fourteen dress codes read here, one lists a leotard and tights for women and nothing else. The other thirteen accept leggings, yoga wear or similar. About half ask for a close fit or warn against baggy clothes.

Can I wear sweatpants to ballet class?

It depends on the school. A Boston ballet school counts sweats among the workout clothes its adults wear, and asks that whatever you choose be form-fitted and stretchy. A British studio advises against loose joggers.

What should a child wear to a first ballet class?

The school’s uniform, so ask before you buy. At the schools read here that means a leotard, pink or skin-tone tights, matching slippers and a bun, sometimes with a leotard color for each level. Boys wear a T-shirt with tights, leggings or shorts.
