    What the kinds mean

Zoo is short for zoological garden. In a safari park, visitors watch freely roaming animals from a vehicle. A wildlife park is a zoo with spacious enclosures that approximate natural habitat. An animal sanctuary protects animals for the rest of their lives. A menagerie is a precursor of the modern zoo.

    Tips
    • Lock the star animal and change the place until the two fit.

    Questions and answers

What is a good name for a zoo?

The place it stands in, then the kind of animal park: Tamberley Wildlife Park, Quillbrook Zoological Garden. A star animal with a name, such as Biscuit the tortoise, gives a story someone to visit.

What is the difference between a zoo and a safari park?

In a zoo, animals are kept within enclosures for exhibition. In a safari park, visitors drive their own vehicles, or ride in the park's, to observe freely roaming animals. A safari park is larger than a zoo.

    What does zoo stand for?

Zoo is short for zoological garden. Zoological refers to zoology, the study of animals. A zoo is also called a zoological park, an animal park or a menagerie.

    Are these real zoos?

No. Every place name was searched in name lists, place lists and across Wikipedia, and any name that turned up was cut, so no zoo listed there is named. The star animals were named for this page; a real animal somewhere may share a name.

How this list was compiled: 98 made-up place names for a zoo in a story, a game or a class project, written for this page. Each made-up name was checked by script on 2026-10-03 against a dictionary, lists of first names and surnames, GeoNames places (towns of the world, and every name in the tables for the United Kingdom and the United States, also with the spaces taken out; https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0), names from published fiction, every list on this site, the page titles of English Wikipedia and a full-text search of English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0). 130 of 229 candidates were cut (53 a real place; 35 set aside on a second reading; 16 found on English Wikipedia; 15 already on another list of this site; 9 a name from published fiction, or one letter from one; 1 a dictionary word; 1 a real first name or surname); one more name passed and is kept off the page as a spare. The names come from one list kept for all the made-up place pages of this site, so none is on two pages. No list of names is complete, so search a name before you publish it. Licence: own work
