How it works

These Albanian last names come with what a dictionary records for each: a forebear's first name, a title or trade, a place or a clan. Hoxha is from a word for an imam; Krasniqi is a clan name.

Albanian surnames by root

The dropdown under the button, Root, keeps one kind: 141 names built on a forebear's first name, such as Ahmeti from Ahmet and Gjonaj from Gjon; 34 from a title, a trade or another word, such as Prifti, Kovaçi and Peshkatari; or 34 from a place or a clan, such as Frashëri, Elbasani and Gashi.

The commonest names

Under More filters, Place in the count keeps the 112 names with a place in a count of surnames: the ten commonest of Albania or of Kosovo, such as Hoxha and Krasniqi, or Albania's places 11 to 100 and 101 to 200.

Tips
  • The ending -aj on a first name means son of: Hasanaj is son of Hasan.
  • A card with no root gives only its census place, so No root on the card with No place given finds nothing.

Questions and answers

What is the most common Albanian last name?

Hoxha, by its dictionary entry, which cites the 2011 census of Albania. The word is the definite form of hoxhë, an imam. The entries for Çela, Marku, Shehu and Muça place them second to fifth.

Why do Albanian last names end in -aj?

The ending -aj is patronymic: it means son of the name before it. Lucaj is son of Luca, and Hasanaj is son of Hasan.

Why do so many Albanian last names end in -i or -u?

They are the definite endings of Albanian nouns: -i for most masculine names, and -u after k, g, h or i. Ahmeti is built on Ahmet and Aliu on Ali.

What do Albanian last names mean?

Most come from a forebear's first name, a place or a clan. Names from a trade or title are less common than in other countries, but Hoxha and Prifti, from words for an imam and a priest, are very common.

What are common last names in Kosovo?

Krasniqi, then Gashi and Berisha, in the Kosovo Agency of Statistics count that English Wikipedia's list gives; all three are clan names. Morina, Shala, Bytyqi, Hasani, Kastrati, Kryeziu and Hoti complete the ten most common, and their dictionary entries agree.

How this list was compiled

A list by a written rule, built on 3 October 2026 from English Wiktionary's category of Albanian surnames (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Albanian_surnames, CC BY-SA 4.0), read that day. A surname is listed when its Albanian entry gives at least one of two things. One: an etymology whose first sentence could be read as plain text; the card prints that sentence, and the root is sorted by it: a forebear's first name with an ending (the dictionary files most of these as patronymics), a title, a trade or another word, or a place or a clan. Two: a line that places the name in the 2011 census of Albania or of Kosovo; the card gives a band (the 10 commonest, places 11 to 50, 51 to 100, 101 to 200) and no figure, and says that the place is the dictionary entry's. Two cards take their Kosovo place from elsewhere, and say so: Gashi and Berisha stand second and third in the Kosovo table of English Wikipedia's list of most common surnames in European countries (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_common_surnames_in_European_countries, CC BY-SA 4.0), which cites a Kosovo Agency of Statistics report of 2017, and their dictionary entries give no Kosovo place. Berisha's root is the second paragraph of its entry's etymology, put in our own words. The same list (read the same day) says no official listing for Albania is at hand, so Albania's bands rest on the dictionary alone and the list does not claim to hold every name of a band. The kinds agree with what English Wikipedia's article 'Albanian name' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albanian_name, read the same day) says of Albanian surnames: first names with -aj, -i or -u, place names, clan names such as Krasniqi and Gashi, and the titles Hoxha and Prifti. A root with a capital letter is filed as a forebear's first name; two are not, because the encyclopedia's list gives them another kind: Dervishi (a title of Bektashi clergy) stands with the titles and Gegaj (Gheg regional origin) with the places. Entries whose only gloss or root word is about a person's body, skin, sight or hearing print no root and stay only where they carry a census place; one entry spelled as an English first name was left out, one whose only root is a surname of another language, one whose spelling reads as a crude English word, and one more because another list of this site that holds it has no room under the site's cap on shared names. That makes 279 names: 141 built on a forebear's first name, 34 on a title, a trade or a word, 34 on a place or a clan and 70 with no root on the card; 112 carry a place in a count. A root is what a dictionary records for the name in general, not for any family. Shared with other lists of this site: 21 of 279 names (7.5 in 100), counted on 3 October 2026 over every dataset on disk; cap 40. No reader of Albanian has checked the list.
