Draw names and pick a type

Press Pick 5 new Renaissance names. The Name type menu under the button keeps to women's names, men's names or family names, the Renaissance last names of the census. More filters in the menu opens a second row: Most common, Common or Less common.

Put a full name together

The census wrote each head of household as a first name, the father's first name and, where the family had one, a family name. Draw a man's name, a second one for his father and a family name. Spellings are the census file's own: Iacopo, Pagolo, Niccolo.

Questions and answers

What were common names in Renaissance Florence?

Giovanni, Antonio, Piero, Francesco and Iacopo led among the men who headed households in 1427, and Caterina, Antonia, Margherita, Piera and Nanna among the women. Each was counted in the Online Catasto, the published file of the census.

Did everyone in Renaissance Florence have a family name?

No. The census file enters most households with no family name, and its codebook notes that many lower-class families had none. Old houses such as the Bardi, the Strozzi and the Medici are recorded with theirs.

Why are the spellings unusual?

They are the census file's own. Its spelling is not standardized, so Iacopo, Pagolo and Zanobi stand as recorded. The file also cuts names at ten letters, and a ten-letter first name is listed only where a dictionary confirms the full name.

Are these names from all of Renaissance Italy?

No, from one city and one census. Every name here was recorded in Florence between 1427 and 1429. Names from other cities and countries, and names in use in Italy today, are not on this page.

How this list was compiled: A list by a written rule, built on 2 October 2026 from the Online Catasto of 1427 (https://cds.library.brown.edu/projects/catasto/), the published data file of the tax census of the city of Florence in 1427 with its additions of 1428 and 1429, about 10,000 households. First names: the file's list of first names of heads of household with the number of households under each (https://cds.library.brown.edu/projects/catasto/newsearch/first_names.html); the women's share was counted from the file's own search for heads recorded as women, read the same day. A man's name is listed when 8 or more men who headed a household carried it, a woman's name when 3 or more women did. A name that stands on the men's list is left off the women's list where more men than women carried it: Andrea and Luca, which a few women who headed households also carried. Family names: the file's list of family names (https://cds.library.brown.edu/projects/catasto/newsearch/family_names.html), every name recorded for 8 or more households. The card gives a band, not the count: for men 100 or more, 25 to 99, or 8 to 24 heads; for women 25 or more, 10 to 24, or 3 to 9; for families 20 or more, 10 to 19, or 8 or 9 households. Spellings are the file's own, which are not standardized (Iacopo, Pagolo, Niccolo). The file cuts every name at ten letters: a first name of exactly ten letters is listed only where a dictionary entry confirms the full name (5 were left out), and family names of ten letters (19) and family names the file runs together with del, della or dalla are left out. Three men's names that pass the rule (Giuliano, Lando and Santi) are left out, because a list of last names on this site holds them and would otherwise pass its limit of 40 shared names in 100. 85 women's names, 108 men's names and 70 family names. A name is a name, not a person: no card joins a first name to a family name. Cited as its editors ask: Online Catasto of 1427. Version 1.3. Edited by David Herlihy, Christiane Klapisch-Zuber, R.
