Random Movie Character Generator: Heroes, Villains and Creatures: how it works

Press the button and five movie characters appear, each with the film, its year and one line on who they are. The list holds 538 characters from 333 live-action films, from a silent vampire of 1922 to a plastic doll of 2023. Pair a decade with Villains or Creatures and robots: the 1980s alone supply 15 villains.

Three games from one draw

Charades: set the count to 1, hide the screen and act the line under the name, which gives you a job, a prop or a place. Who am I: a friend draws for you and answers only yes or no; ask the decade first, then hero or villain. Casting call: draw five, lock two and recast them with actors working today.

What the year and the chips mean

The year is when the named film first opened. A character who returns in sequels appears once, under the film that introduced the version we picked, and a franchise gets five places at most. The 1980s chip is the largest with 111 and the 2010s and 2020s the smallest with 62; Villains holds 64 and Creatures and robots 39, and both cut across the decades. Real people from biographical films are left out. Last checked 18 September 2026.

Tips

  • For a costume, tap a decade and press 10. A line that mentions clothing, such as a poncho or clown make-up, marks a character people will know across a room.
  • Writers: draw two characters from different decades and seat them in one train compartment. Each line gives you a job or a goal.
  • Run a standing quiz with the daily character: press Hide all films, and the club names film and year before anyone opens the line.

Questions and answers

Who are the greatest movie heroes and villains?

One well-known answer is the American Film Institute's list of June 2003: fifty heroes and fifty villains from American films. Atticus Finch of To Kill a Mockingbird led the heroes and Hannibal Lecter the villains. Both are here. The Villains chip is our own choice.

Are animated characters included?

No. Characters from fully animated films are on the random cartoon character generator, and the two lists share no name. Films that mix actors with animation or effects do count, so a computer-made creature acting beside a human cast is here.

Can children use this list?

The lines are clean: no swearing, gore or sexual detail, and the masked killers of slasher series are left out. A few still name a grown-up subject, a murder or a teenage pregnancy, because the film is about it, and some characters come from thrillers and war films made for adults. Before a child watches a drawn film, check its age rating.
