A Yoruba, Hausa or Igbo name generator

Choose Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa in the menu under the button. Many names are short sentences: the Yoruba Rotimi is given as “Stay with me”, the Igbo Chukwudi as “God lives”. Open More filters for names given to girls or to boys.

Hausa names for the day of birth

12 Hausa cards name the weekday a child was born on: Asabe goes to a girl born on a Saturday, Talatu on a Tuesday, Ɗanladi to a boy born on a Sunday. 18 more are forms of Arabic names with their English form, as Haruna is Aaron.

Tips
  • 113 Yoruba cards add the spelling with tone marks, as Rótìmí for Rotimi.
  • 9 Igbo cards do not say girls or boys, because their source does not; they stand under both.

Questions and answers

What are the most common Nigerian names?

No official list exists. Nigeria publishes no national count of given names, so this page does not say how common any name is. It is a selection of names whose language and meaning a source states.

What do Nigerian names mean?

Many say something whole. Chiamaka is given as “God is beautiful” in Igbo, and the Yoruba Rotimi as “Stay with me”. A card quotes the meaning its dictionary entry or article gives, and nothing is guessed.

Which languages do these Nigerian names come from?

Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa. Nigeria has many more languages; names from Edo, Efik and others are not here, because no source read for this page gave their meanings.

Are these real Nigerian names?

Yes. The Yoruba and Hausa names have given-name entries in English Wiktionary, and each Igbo name has an English Wikipedia article whose opening gives a cited meaning. All were read on 3 October 2026. Only the draw is random.

How this list was compiled: A selection by a written rule, built on 3 October 2026. Nigeria publishes no national count of given names, so nothing here says how common a name is. A name is listed when a source states its language and its meaning or origin. Yoruba (119 names): the Yoruba given-name entries of English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Yoruba_given_names, CC BY-SA 4.0, 233 entries read that day) that state a meaning, less one whose title on English Wikipedia leads to a single living person; the card quotes it, and the spelling with tone marks is the entry's headword. Hausa (67 names): the Hausa given-name entries there (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Hausa_given_names, 111 entries) whose etymology glosses the word or words the name is made of, or that say when the name is given (16 names for the day or season of birth, 12 of them for a day of the week), or that come from Arabic and give an English form (18 cards). Igbo (69 names): the articles in English Wikipedia's category 'Igbo given names' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Igbo_given_names, 110 articles read that day) whose opening names Igbo, calls the name a name given to a person and not a surname only, and gives the name's meaning in Igbo in quotation marks with a cited source; the card quotes that meaning, in American spelling, and 13 articles whose meaning carries no citation are left out. The dictionary holds only four Igbo given names, so the Igbo cards rest on Wikipedia and on the sources its articles cite, which are websites about names; a reader who knows Igbo should check them. Who a name is given to (girls, boys or both) is the source's statement; 9 Igbo cards whose article does not say stand under both. Many meanings name God or a deity, and are printed as the source gives them. Four Hausa names whose gloss speaks of slavery, of children who died young or of skin color are left out (Baiwa, Bawa, Barau, Jatau). Names from Edo, Efik and other languages of Nigeria are not listed: no source read gave their meanings. The plain spelling used for sorting drops tone marks and under-dots and is made here. No speaker of Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa has read the list, and it names no person.
