Random Italian Name Generator

How this list was compiled: Given names: Istat, the Italian national statistics institute, 'Contanomi: quanti bambini si chiamano...?' (https://www.istat.it/dati/calcolatori/contanomi/), its list of the 200 names most given to boys and to girls born in 2024 and entered in the population registers, read on 2026-09-30 from the data service the calculator page loads (https://www.istat.it/wp-content/themes/EGPbs5-child/contanomi/nati/index2022.php?type=list&limit=200&year=2024). Listed: every name in the first 150 places for each sex that is a single word; double names are left out (Maria Vittoria, Maria Sole, Maria Francesca, Francesco Pio), which is why each sex has fewer than 150 cards. A card gives the band of the name's own place in Istat's list (top 10, top 50, top 100, top 150), not the place or the number of children. Istat prints names in capitals and writes a final accent as an apostrophe (NICOLO'); the usual spelling was put back from the name's Italian entry on English Wiktionary for 2 names (Niccolò, Nicolò). Sex is the list the name is on. Family names: the Italy table of English Wikipedia's 'List of most common surnames in European countries' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_common_surnames_in_European_countries, wiki text read 2026-09-30), 100 rows, which says it follows the Mappa dei Cognomi website and cites Forebears for the ranks. A card gives the band of the name's place in that table (top 10, top 50, top 100), never the place or the table's estimate of families. The meaning is the table's own Meaning column and is printed only where a second reference agrees: the name's Italian entry on English Wiktionary (CC BY-SA 4.0, read 2026-09-30 through the MediaWiki API), or an entry that entry points at, uses the same gloss word (script check, 2026-09-30). 51 family cards carry a meaning and 49 carry none; among those with none are 8 whose table gloss is about a body, a foundling or a belief, or only repeats the name, left out by our choice (Caputo, Esposito, Grassi, Grasso, Pagano, Sala, Sanna, Vitale), and the gloss of Colombo is cut to its first word. Where the table gives an English given name as the meaning, the card says 'From the name ..., in its English form'. A spelling on two lists is marked in brackets (Bruno (family name), Giordano (family name), Leone (family name), Martino (family name), Orlando (family name), Romeo (family name), Bruno (boy's name), Giordano (boy's name), Leone (boy's name), Martino (boy's name), Orlando (boy's name), Romeo (boy's name)). x.type is what the Name type row filters on (family, family-50, family-10, girl, boy); x.gband is what the given-name row filters on (top-100, top-50, top-10) and family cards carry none; x.ascii drops accents for sorting. Counted from this file: 396 cards, 100 family names, 147 girls' names and 149 boys' names. Every card that states a meaning, an origin or another form of the name carries the address of the page that statement was read on in x.src (and a second reference in x.src2 where one was used).
