Celtic Name Generator
Five real first names a press from the six Celtic languages, each with its language and English form.
How it works
This Celtic name generator draws five real first names per press from 540 in six languages: Scottish Gaelic, Breton, Manx and Cornish in full, with samples of Irish and Welsh. Each card names its language and what a dictionary gives.

Pick a language
The menu under the button keeps one language: Scottish Gaelic (197 names), Breton (146), Manx (108), Cornish (11), Irish (40) or Welsh (40). The Cornish list is short because the dictionary lists few Cornish names. Irish and Welsh are samples of forty.
Girls' names, boys' names, one letter
Open More filters to keep girls' or boys' names or one first letter. An accented letter sits under the plain one, so Ùna is under U.
Tips
Cards pair a name with its English form: Manx Ean and Breton Yann are John, Scottish Gaelic Seumas is James.
Questions and answers
What is a Celtic name?
Here it is a first name in one of the six living Celtic languages: Breton, Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh, spoken without a break, and Cornish and Manx, which were revived. These are names of living languages, not of an ancient people.
Is this a Gaelic name generator?
Yes, for three of the six languages. Irish, Manx and Scottish Gaelic form the Goidelic group, also called the Gaelic languages; choose one of them in the Language menu. Welsh, Cornish and Breton form the Brittonic group.
What do Celtic names mean?
A card gives a meaning only where the name's dictionary entry gives one: Dùghall joins dubh, black or dark, to gall, stranger or foreigner. Many cards give the English form instead, as Breton Tomaz is Thomas.
How are Celtic names pronounced?
The page gives no pronunciation: the dictionary entries print it only in phonetic symbols, and each language spells sounds its own way. The English form on a card is the same name in English, not a guide to the sound.

How this list was compiled: Real first names in the six living Celtic languages, built on 2 October 2026 from English Wiktionary's lists of given names by language (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Given_names_by_language , the male and female lists of each language, read 2 October 2026). Scottish Gaelic (197 names), Breton (146), Manx (108) and Cornish (11) are taken in full: every single-word name on the two lists that has an entry in that language. The Cornish lists are short. Irish (40) and Welsh (40) are samples of forty: the Irish sample is taken at even steps through the alphabet from the listed names that are not on this site's page of Irish names and whose entry gives an English form, a parent name or a gloss; the Welsh sample is the listed names in the 2025 top 100 for Wales that carry such a fact, filled up one letter at a time through the alphabet from the names whose entry glosses the words they are made from. One Irish name is kept out of the sample because its gloss is a drink. A card gives the language, whether the entry marks the name for girls or boys, and what the entry gives and nothing more: the English form, the name it is a variant or a pet form of, and the words it is made from with their glosses, from the first paragraph of the etymology that belongs to the given name. Every glossed part of a compound is printed. Nothing is printed where the entry calls the origin possible, uncertain, unknown, disputed or a folk etymology, or gives two rival origins. Where an entry has one line for girls and one for boys, the name is marked for both and each fact says which line it comes from. Four English short forms that are also unkind or crude words are left off four cards. 406 of the 540 cards carry at least one fact; a card with none gives the language alone. No meaning and no pronunciation is written by us. A spelling listed in two languages has one card found under both. That there are six living Celtic languages, four spoken without a break and two revived (Cornish and Manx), and that Irish, Manx and Scottish Gaelic form the Goidelic or Gaelic group and Welsh, Cornish and Breton the Brittonic group, is from English Wikipedia's 'Celtic languages' and 'Goidelic languages' (read 2 October 2026). Single first names only. No speaker of these languages has read the list.
