Random Question Generator for Kids: 300 Questions, Ages 4 to 12: how it works
This random question generator for kids holds 300 questions: 100 each for ages 4 to 6, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12. Choose an age chip, add a kind chip if you like, press New question and read the card aloud. Every card has a follow-up, ready for the moment a child shrugs or stops at one word.
Car, dinner table or morning meeting
Pick one cards suit the car: nobody needs to see the screen, so the driver can play. At dinner, draw an About you card and have everybody answer, grown-ups included. A morning meeting, as many elementary classrooms run it, goes greeting, sharing, group activity, morning message. A Silly card fits the sharing part, because every child in the circle can answer in one sentence.
Count to three before you help
In the 1970s the science educator Mary Budd Rowe timed classroom questions and found that teachers waited less than a second for a reply. When they paused for 2.7 seconds or more, pupils gave much longer answers and fewer said "I don't know". So ask, then count slowly in your head. If the quiet goes on, read the follow-up.
Tips
Mixed ages? Use the youngest child's chip. A ten-year-old can enjoy an easy card, but a hard one leaves a five-year-old out.
Answer a card yourself now and then: a short, honest answer shows how long a turn should be.
A pass is always fine. Press again, and that card stays away until the rest under your chips have had a turn.

What ages are the questions for?
Four to twelve. Ages 4 to 6 cards use short words and ask about things a child can see, do or pretend. Ages 7 to 9 add school, friends and inventing. Ages 10 to 12 ask for an opinion and a reason. The bands are our own judgment, not a test result, so try a neighboring chip. Teenagers will get more from the general question list.
Can I use this random question generator for kids with a whole class?
Yes. No card asks what a child owns, where they have traveled, who lives at home or which holidays they keep, so nobody is left without an answer. Nothing is scary, and nothing asks about money or looks. With a big group, let pairs answer each other before a few share with the room.
Who wrote the questions?
We did, all 300 and their follow-ups. None comes from a card game, a classroom pack or another site. The page shuffles a fixed list, printed in full at the bottom, so you can read every card before a child sees one. Each age chip holds 20 of each kind.

Every question sits in one age band and one kind: Ages 4 to 6 (100), Ages 7 to 9 (100) and Ages 10 to 12 (100); Silly (60), Imagine if (60), About you (60), Pick one (60) and Big thinking (60). Each one was read against the same house rules before it went in: a child can answer it aloud in under a minute with no special knowledge; it never asks what a child owns, where they have traveled, who is in their family or which holidays they keep; it stays away from death, fear, romance, fighting, money, bodies, looks and religion; and it names no brand, show, game or living person. The age bands are our own judgment of vocabulary and how abstract the idea is, not a test result, so a younger or older child may enjoy a neighboring band. The questions have no right answer, so they need no fact-checking; the two outside facts in the page copy were checked on 2026-09-19.
