Dimension Name Generator

One press names another dimension, says what kind it is, how to get in and what is different there.

Stillwhile, a fairyland. The way in: a train platform between two numbered ones. What is different there: smoke falls and settles like snow.

    How it works

This dimension name generator makes a place beside the world in four parts, as in "Mirrorwell, a pocket universe. The way in: a mirror hung facing another mirror. What is different there: footprints appear a moment before the step."

    Four parts

Press New dimension name. Lock a name such as the Ninth Fold and press until the way in and the difference suit it, or lock one difference and press for other dimensions that share it.

    The kinds are dictionary words

Otherworld, shadowland, dreamscape, pocket universe: each kind is a real word that stories use for a world beside ours, and the list under the tool gives its dictionary meaning. Names, ways in and differences are invented.

    Questions and answers

    What is a pocket universe?

In games and fiction, a small, self-contained fictional universe. In physics the same words name a hypothetical realm of inflationary theory, English Wiktionary says. This page uses the fiction sense.

    What is a parallel universe?

A universe that exists separately alongside another universe, as part of a multiverse, in English Wiktionary's words. On this page it is one of the kinds a new dimension can be.

What is the difference between a dimension and a world?

In story talk a dimension is a place beside the world, reached by a way in, where a world is the place itself. This page names the place beside; our fantasy world name page names the world.

Are these dimension names from a film or a game?

None that we found. Each name is our own, and a name that matched a Wikipedia page, a phrase in its text or a page on the fan wikis we read was cut. Search a name before you publish it.

How this list was compiled: Our own list of 80 invented names for a place beside the world, written on 2026-10-03. The one-word names were screened that day against an English dictionary and lists of real names; GeoNames places of 500 people and up (https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0); every list on this site, the world and planet names among them; a rude-word list; and every word of every page title of 16 fantasy fan wikis. Every name, with and without "The", was looked up among the page titles and redirects of English Wikipedia and searched in its text (https://en.wikipedia.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0), and looked up as a page title on 8 fan wikis of fantasy and science fiction (forgottenrealms.fandom.com, marvel.fandom.com, dc.fandom.com, tardis.fandom.com, memory-alpha.fandom.com, elderscrolls.fandom.com, strangerthings.fandom.com, mtg.fandom.com). 45 candidates were cut (24 found in the text of English Wikipedia; 6 a dictionary word; 5 a rude word inside or across the join; 4 on another list of this site; 4 a Wikipedia page title; 1 a name from published fiction, or one letter from it; 1 a fan wiki page title), among them Umbrel, Lowlight, Underglass, Sidewise, Hithermost, Loomward.
