    Farmer Name of the day

    How it works

This farmer name generator makes up a farmer for a story, a game or a class play, as in "Alden Sheafgood, a crofter" or "Arlene Stookley, a beekeeper." The surnames are invented; the kinds of farmer are real words.

    First name, surname, kind

Press New farmer name. Lock a surname such as Scythewell and press for a whole family, or lock the kind on drover and press for a crew on the road.

    The kinds are real words

A yeoman farmed land of his own; a tenant farmer rents it; a hayward once watched over the crops. The list under the tool gives the dictionary meaning of each kind, old and new.

    Questions and answers

    What is a crofter?

One who holds a croft, a small farm, and is usually the person who lives on it and works it. English Wiktionary gives the word; this page deals it as one of its kinds of farmer.

    What is a yeoman farmer?

In history, a yeoman was one of a class of small freeholders who farmed their own land, a commoner of good standing, English Wiktionary says.

    What is a tenant farmer?

A person who farms land rented from a landlord. A smallholder, by contrast, owns or runs a small farm, and a hired hand is employed for chores and manual labor on someone else's.

    Are these real farmers?

No. The first names are plain real names, but each surname is invented and was checked against the surname table of the 2020 United States Census. A made-up name can still match a real person.

How this list was compiled: 80 plain first names with a country sound, our own choice, written on 2026-10-03. Each is in the United States Social Security Administration's public file of first names on birth records (https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/limits.html). Names were taken out until no other list of this site or its sister sites holds more than 40 in 100 of them. No name says who a farmer is or was; a plain first name and an invented surname can still match a real person. Licence: own work

How this list was compiled: Our own list of 145 invented surnames built from fields, crops, tools, animals and weather, written on 2026-10-03. Each was screened that day against the surname table of the 2020 United States Census, so that none is a surname it lists; an English dictionary and a list of first names; GeoNames places of 500 people and up (https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0); every list on this site, the farmer last names among them; a rude-word list; every word of every page title of 16 fantasy fan wikis; and the page titles and redirects of English Wikipedia and a full-text search of it (https://en.wikipedia.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0). 75 candidates were cut (32 found in the text of English Wikipedia; 12 a real first name or surname; 12 a name from published fiction, or one letter from it; 9 a dictionary word; 6 a Wikipedia page title; 4 on another list of this site), among them Barleymow, Ryeland, Haywain, Oxgang, Fallowmere, Hedgecombe. A surname of this shape can still exist outside those lists. Licence: own work
