Last names come from first names

Iceland's naming system is not built on family names. A last name is a parent's first name in the genitive plus -son or -dóttir: Jón's son is Jónsson and his daughter Jónsdóttir. 55 men's cards print the pair their name gives, as Sigurður gives Sigurðarson and Sigurðardóttir.

Questions and answers

What are the most common Icelandic names?

Anna, Guðrún, Kristín, Sigríður and Margrét lead Statistics Iceland's table of women's names for 1 January 2023, and Jón, Sigurður, Guðmundur, Gunnar and Ólafur lead the men's table.

How do Icelandic last names work?

A last name names a parent, not a family: the father's or mother's first name in the genitive, then -son for a son or -dóttir for a daughter. A brother and a sister carry different last names. A few Icelanders have an inherited family name.

Can I get an Icelandic name without the special letters?

Yes. Every card whose name has þ, ð, æ, ö or an accent adds a plain spelling made here: þ becomes th, ð becomes d, æ becomes ae, and accents are dropped, so Þórður is also given as Thordur.

Are these real Icelandic names?

Yes. Every name is in Statistics Iceland's tables of the most common names of men and women, read on 2 October 2026, and a second reference lists it as an Icelandic name. Six with no such reference, such as Piotr and Tomasz, are left out.

Rule of this list: a name of the tables is listed when a second reference has it as an Icelandic name. 166 names have an Icelandic given-name entry in English Wiktionary; 30 more have a page in Icelandic Wikipedia's categories of Icelandic women's or men's names (https://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flokkur:Íslensk_kvenmannsnöfn and https://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flokkur:Íslensk_karlmannsnöfn, read the same day). Six names of the men's table have neither and are left out: Piotr, Tomasz, Marcin, Michal, Krzysztof and Pawel; four of them have a Polish given-name entry in the same dictionary. That leaves 101 women's and 95 men's names. Where a row gives several spellings the first is used. A card gives a band (top 10, top 50, top 100) and no place or count, because the agency's terms of reuse were not found. English forms: the name's Icelandic entry in English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org, read the same day), printed only where the entry names an English equivalent; 26 cards carry one. Last names: a men's card names the last names a son and a daughter take from it only where this site's list of Icelandic last names holds them (55 cards); that list builds them on the genitive in the dictionary's declension table and keeps a form only when an encyclopedia page carries it.
