One that means the sea. Marina is Latin for of the sea, Pelagia comes from a Greek word for sea, Thalassa is the Greek word for sea, and Morvoren is the Cornish word for mermaid.

It has no Sirens. Some old versions picture the Sirens of Greek myth as birds with women's heads and others as mermaids. The Nereids on this page are the sea nymphs of the same myths.

Who were the Nereids?

The sea nymphs of Greek myth, the fifty daughters of Nereus, the Old Man of the Sea, and Doris. This page lists the 51 that Wikipedia's table marks as named by the poet Hesiod, Thetis and Galatea among them.

How this list was compiled: A list of 205 names for sea people, in three kinds. Real names (102): given names and names of legend that mean sea, wave, tide, pearl, coral or water in some language, or name a figure of the sea; each is kept only where its English Wiktionary entry, or failing that its English Wikipedia article, fetched on 2 October 2026, gives the meaning printed on the card; a script checked the key words of every card line against the fetched text, and the lines it flagged were then read against their pages and reworded to match. A form of Margaret, Marina or Undine rests on the entry of that name, which is on the list too. The nine wave daughters follow English Wikipedia's article Nine Daughters of Ægir and Rán (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_Daughters_of_%C3%86gir_and_R%C3%A1n). Japanese names can be written with other signs that mean other things; two cards say so. Nereids (51): the sea nymphs that English Wikipedia's table of Nereids (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nereids, read the same day) marks as named in Hesiod's Theogony; the card also says which of Homer, Apollodorus and Hyginus the table marks, read from the table by script. Made up by us (52): our own names, each with our own way of saying it. Every invented name was screened by script on 2 October 2026 and dropped on any hit: a US English dictionary; the US Census Bureau's list of last names and the Social Security Administration's list of first names; GeoNames places (https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0); every other list on this site and every name the rows of a sibling page can spell; an exact English Wikipedia page title; the page titles of 16 fantasy fan wikis saved that day (a title word spelled the same, or for a name of six letters or more one letter away) and an exact page title on eight more fan wikis of games and films; a list of famous fantasy names; and a rude-word list read inside the name (https://github.com/LDNOOBW/List-of-Dirty-Naughty-Obscene-and-Otherwise-Bad-Words, with our own additions). A search cannot be complete, and trade marks were not searched. Marking a name mermaid, merman or either is our own reading for a story and binds nobody. Licence: The list is our own compilation. The meanings follow English Wiktionary and the Nereids English Wikipedia, both CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/). The made-up names are our own work.
