    Let the ending set the sound

    Endings come in four sounds: flowing (Vaesira), harsh (Tzadrak), clicking (Uxatzik) and rumbling (Drogaum). When one sounds right for your creature, lock it and press New species name until the opening fits too. Each ending's line is in the lists below.

    What was screened out

    Five openings and five endings were dropped because a name spelled a real place, a people, a rude or real word, or a species from a game. Trowenna, a name for Tasmania, went that way.

    Questions and answers

    Does it work as a fantasy species name generator?

    Yes. Flowing endings such as sira and rinne suit elves, sea peoples and forest folk; rumbling ones such as gaum and mmoth suit giants and anything old and slow.

    Can I use it as a dragon species name generator?

    Yes. Lock a harsh ending such as zhar, drak or thrax, then press until the opening sounds right, as in Zhuthrax. Keep one ending for every dragon of the same kind.

    Is any of these names used somewhere already?

    None was found in the lists we searched, which include Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who species and every English Wikipedia page title. Those lists are not complete, and trade marks were not searched, so search a name before you publish it.

    How this list was compiled: Own list of 31 opening syllables, stored with a capital because each one starts the name. Rule for the row: every line ends in a vowel or a sound a consonant can follow, so any ending reads aloud after it. Every one of the 992 names these two rows can spell was generated by script and screened on 2026-09-23. Real words and slurs: each name was searched for the 403 words of the LDNOOBW English list (https://github.com/LDNOOBW/List-of-Dirty-Naughty-Obscene-and-Otherwise-Bad-Words) and about 60 more of our own, read across the join. Real peoples, languages and places: each name, and each name with -s, -an, -i, -ese or -ian added, was matched against the ISO 639-3 name index from SIL International (https://iso639-3.sil.org/sites/iso639-3/files/downloads/iso-639-3_Name_Index.tab), the Glottolog languoid list (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/glottolog/glottolog-cldf/master/cldf/languages.csv), the GeoNames cities15000 table with its alternate names (https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/cities15000.zip) and Wikipedia's list of demonyms for countries and nations. Fiction: each name, alone and with -s, was matched against every word of 103 English Wikipedia lists and articles of fictional species, aliens, monsters and characters, among them the Star Trek aliens, the five Star Wars species lists, Doctor Who creatures and aliens, the Stargate races, Races of StarCraft, Races of Warcraft, Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition monsters and deities, the alien races of Marvel and DC Comics, Ben 10 aliens, Pokemon, The Elder Scrolls, Warhammer 40,000, Mass Effect, Halo, Dune and Babylon 5 characters, plus the Marvel and DC character lists A to Z. Finally every name was looked up as an English Wikipedia page title. The openings Sha, Shi, Ka, Ko and Xo and the endings lari, thari, loor, wenna and boom were written and then removed: they spelled a rude word, a real place or people (Trowenna is a name for Tasmania), a Dungeons & Dragons elf (Lythari) or a joke.
