Modern NPC Generator

One press deals a present-day person: a job, a look, a habit, a want and one thing they know.

A farmers market honey seller, with a loose shoelace they keep ignoring, who holds every door a little too long. Today they want to borrow a phone charger for ten minutes. They can tell you how to get a table without a booking.

Padlock: keep a part. Arrows: change only that part.

    NPC of the day

    How it works

This modern NPC generator deals one person of today for a game or a story: a job with a place, what they wear or carry, a habit to act, what they want today and one thing they can tell the players.

    Read the full guide

Deal a person, keep what fits

Press New NPC. Tap a part, press its padlock, then press again: keep the night bus driver on the last route and change the want until it suits the scene.

Five parts, in the order players meet them

The job and the look are what the players see, so they stand first. The habit is the part you act. The want is small enough to meet in one scene, which gives the players a reason to talk to this person now, and what the person can tell you is the reward for helping. Nothing is a number or a rule, so a result fits a mystery, a heist, a superhero city or a short story.

    • Read the look aloud and stop there: let the players ask what the person is doing.
    • Swap the place in the job for one in your own city, and the rest still fits.

    Questions and answers

Is this also a random modern character generator for a story?

Yes. Nothing in a result belongs to a game: it is a job, a look, a habit, a want and something the person knows, in plain words. A writer can use one as a walk-on part, or start a scene from the want.

Does the modern NPC description generator give a name, an age or stats?

No. It describes the person and stops: no name, age, faith, nationality or game numbers, so the result fits any city and any rules. For a name, try the random girl name generator, the random boy name generator or the surname generator.

Can this random modern NPC generator make a list for a whole session?

Yes. Print 20 NPCs gives a sheet of twenty people, and Copy 10 NPCs puts ten on your clipboard. Lock the job first when everyone on the list should hold the same job, such as a floor of call center agents.

    What makes an NPC modern?

The setting. Every job here exists today, from a barista on the early shift to an elevator technician on a callout, and the wants turn on phones, parcels, parking and wifi. For a town of ferrymen and toll keepers, use the random NPC generator.
