How it works
This dystopian name generator names an ordinary citizen of a state that sorts its people: a first name, a surname and a status tag such as "Sector Nine labor pool".

A name, then a place in the system
Press New dystopian name. First names come in three kinds: short clipped names, virtue words such as Verity or Constant, and trade words such as Tiller. Surnames are one or two hard syllables.
What the status tag does
Every tag has a line in the list under the tool that says what it allows. "unregistered" holds no papers, so may not ride the trams. Lock a tag and press to fill one tower or one work crew.
- Two people with one surname and different tags make a family the state has split.
Questions and answers
What makes these names sound dystopian?
Three choices we made: first names that are clipped or are a virtue or a trade, surnames of one or two hard syllables, and a tag after the name that says where the state has filed the person.
Are these characters from a book or a film?
No. Every first name was checked with every surname against Wikipedia's page titles and the text of its articles on dystopian novels and films. A match we did not find is still possible, so search a name before you publish it.
Is the state on this page a real one?
No. The wards, sectors, permits and ration books are invented for stories and games. No real country, law or document is named or copied.
