Questions and answers
What is a good name for a neighborhood?
A name people would know the place by (a family or a landmark) and a word for the lay of the land: Heights on a hill, Hollow in a valley, Landing by the water.
What does Heights mean in a neighborhood name?
Heights means a neighborhood or other development built on a hill. A hollow, by contrast, is a small valley between mountains.
What is a neighborhood?
A neighborhood is a geographically localized community within a larger town, city or suburb. It can be as small as a single street and the buildings along it.
Are these real neighborhoods?
No. The family names are invented and were searched across Wikipedia. A landmark whose pair matched a real place in the GeoNames tables for the United States and the United Kingdom was cut. A small real subdivision may still share a name.
How this list was compiled: 65 names for a made-up neighborhood, written for this page: invented family names and old landmarks. Each made-up name was checked by script on 2026-10-02 against a dictionary, lists of first names and surnames, GeoNames places (towns of the world, and every name in the tables for the United Kingdom and the United States; https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0), names from published fiction, every list on this site, the page titles of English Wikipedia and a full-text search of English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0). 77 of 145 candidates were cut (27 found on English Wikipedia; 24 a real place; 17 a real first name or surname; 7 a name from published fiction, or one letter from one; 2 a rude word inside the letters). The names come from one list kept for all the made-up place pages of this site, so none is on two pages. No list of names is complete, so search a name before you publish it. The landmarks are ordinary words, and so were the tree names first tried, so every pair of a name and a district word was checked as a place name in the same GeoNames tables and as a page title of English Wikipedia, and names behind a real pair were cut. 38 candidates were cut (34 a real place; 2 a Wikipedia page title; 1 a real first name or surname; 1 taken out on a second reading), among them every tree name: Cottonwood, Hickory, Sycamore, Dogwood, Linden, Tamarack. On a second reading 21 more names were taken out: 19 made-up names that read poorly or sat a letter from a real village, and two landmarks (one is a real place on its own, and one makes a real valley with Hollow). A small real subdivision may still share a name. Licence: own work
