How it works
This random NPC generator deals one non-player character in six parts: an invented name, a trade, a habit you can act, a way of speaking, what they want today and one thing they know and have not said.

Deal a person, then keep what fits
Tap a part to lock it or change it alone. Lock Trade on the toll keeper at the east gate and press New NPC until the voice suits the scene. Lock Wants today instead and three townsfolk are after the same thing. Print 20 NPCs makes a cast list for a whole town.
Why there is a want and a secret
A habit and a voice let you play the person at once. The want gives the party a reason to talk to them today, and the secret rewards players who stay to listen. Every line is mild, with no class, race, alignment or number from any game.
Tips
- Read the habit aloud first: players remember the one who counts every coin twice.
- Hold the secret back until somebody asks the right question.
Questions and answers
What does NPC mean?
Non-player character: a character in a game that no player controls. The term comes from tabletop role-playing games, where the game master plays the innkeeper, the guard and the ferryman. This page deals one such person at a time, ready to speak.
How do I make an NPC memorable?
Give them one thing to do and one way to sound. A net mender at the fish quay who shells peas while they talk and says everything twice is remembered longer than a page of history. Then decide what they want today.
Does it use the rules of a particular game?
No. There are no levels, classes, races, alignments or numbers, so a result fits any system or none. For strengths and flaws as separate cards, try the personality generator.
