Random City Generator With Country, Region and Population: how it works
This random city generator draws from 1,398 real cities in 242 countries and territories, from Tokyo and Lagos to Nuuk and Ushuaia. Each card shows the country, the region and a rounded population, and capitals are marked. Tap a chip to stay inside one continent, or inside China, Japan, Russia, France, Italy or the United States, then lock, swap, save and share.
Draw, narrow and keep
Five cities are on the page when it opens. Press New cities or the space bar for five more, or set the size to 1 when you just want to say "give me a random city" and get one name in large type. The chips narrow the draw: six continents, a Capital cities chip holding 224 capitals, and six country chips. Nothing repeats until every city that passes your chip has been dealt. The padlock holds a city while the others change, and the heart saves it for your next visit.
What made the list and what did not
The list starts from the GeoNames table of world cities, downloaded on 18 September 2026. It keeps every city of 500,000 people or more, every capital, the largest cities of each country, and extra depth where people ask for it: 94 cities in China, 43 in Japan, 41 in Italy, 40 each in Russia and France and 50 in the United States. Rows that are really districts of a bigger city, such as Brooklyn and the numbered arrondissements of Paris, were taken out by hand.
Why the population may not match your atlas
Each count is the GeoNames figure rounded to two digits, and it follows the boundary the country itself draws. Tokyo shows about 9.7 million because that covers the 23 central wards, not the whole metropolis. Chongqing shows about 22 million because its city limits take in an area close to the size of Austria, farmland included. Capital notes were checked on 18 September 2026, which is why Ciudad de la Paz, not Malabo, is marked as the capital of Equatorial Guinea.
Tips
- Quiz night: read only the city name aloud and ask the room for the country. With the Capital cities chip on, every answer is a capital too.
- Draw two cities and guess which lies further north before you look. Rome and Chicago sit on almost the same line of latitude.
- Writers: draw one city for where a character grew up and one for where the story opens, then work out what carried them between the two.
- For a class research task, set the size to 20, press Copy all and hand one city to each pair. Ask for its river or coast, its main language and one local dish.
- The city of the day is the same for every visitor and changes at midnight. Pin it on a wall map each morning.
Questions and answers
How do I pick a random city in the world with no filter at all?
Leave every chip off and press New cities. Each of the 1,398 cities then has the same chance, so Asia comes up most often, because 508 of the cities are there, and Oceania least, with 48. The draw is made in your browser.
Can I get a random city in China, a random city in Japan or a random city in Russia?
Yes, each has its own chip. China holds 94 cities, from Shanghai to Kashgar on the old Silk Road. Japan holds 43, from Sapporo in the north to Naha in Okinawa. Russia holds 40, from Kaliningrad on the Baltic to Vladivostok on the Pacific. Every draw stays inside that country until you tap the chip again.
Is there a chip for a random city in Europe, a random city in France or a random city in Italy?
All three. The Europe chip covers 370 cities in 52 countries and territories, from Reykjavík to Volgograd. France has 40, from Paris down to Tourcoing, and Italy has 41, from Rome to Venice. Only one chip is active at a time. For any other country, draw from its continent and lock the cities you want.
Why is Russia under Europe and Turkey under Asia?
The continent chips follow the United Nations M49 standard, which files each country whole. It places Russia in Eastern Europe, so Vladivostok counts as Europe here although it faces Japan. It places Turkey in Western Asia, so Istanbul counts as Asia although part of it stands in Europe.
Does it include small towns in the United States?
No. The United States chip holds 50 of the largest and best known American cities, from New York City to Salt Lake City. Our random US city page goes much deeper, down to places of about 10,000 people, so use that one for a road trip stop or a small-town story setting.
