    Registered Name of the day

    How it works

This pedigree dog name generator makes the long registered name a show dog carries: a made-up kennel name, then a phrase, such as Stonemeadow's Caught Red Pawed. The short call name comes with it.

    Read the full guide

How a registered name is built

By tradition the breeder's kennel name forms the first part of a dog's registered name. Many breeders also name a litter to a pattern, such as one first letter for every puppy. At home the dog answers to a short call name. This dog show names generator follows that custom.

    The length limit

A major American kennel club allows 50 characters, counting spaces, apostrophes and hyphens, and charges an additional fee above 36. Every registered name here is 36 characters or fewer.

Press New registered name. Tap a part to lock it, then press again to change the rest.

    Questions and answers

What is a registered name for a dog?

It is the name under which a purebred dog is registered with a kennel club. Along with it the dog often has a simpler call name, which owners and handlers use when they talk to the dog.

How long can a registered dog name be?

It depends on the registry, since naming rules vary. The American club whose rules this page read allows 50 characters with spaces, apostrophes and hyphens counted, and an additional fee applies above 36. This page is unofficial; the club's own naming rules decide.

Can I register a dog under one of these names?

This page cannot say. The kennel names are made up and were not checked against any club's register of kennel names, and a registered kennel name may be used in a dog's name only with its owner's consent.

What words are not allowed in a registered name?

The rules this page read bar show titles such as Champion, the words kennel, male, stud, sire, dam and female, breed names alone, and Roman numerals at the end of a name.

How this list was compiled: Made-up kennel names, written for this page on 2026-10-02, each 12 characters or fewer. Every one was checked by script that day against a dictionary, lists of first names and surnames, GeoNames places (towns of the world and every name in the tables for the United Kingdom and the United States; https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0), names from published fiction, every list on this site and the page titles of English Wikipedia. 24 candidates were cut, among them Briarwick, Oakmere, Merrowfield, Wrenfold, Foxhaven, Mossgate. The custom that a breeder's kennel name opens a registered name is described in English Wikipedia, Breed registry, under Registered names and naming traditions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breed_registry, read 2026-10-02; CC BY-SA 4.0), and the American Kennel Club's naming rules say a registered kennel name may be part of a dog's name only with its owner's consent (https://www.akc.org/register/information/naming-of-dog/, read 2026-10-02). No name here was checked against any kennel club's register of kennel names. Licence: own work

How this list was compiled: Phrases of the kind a registered name carries, written for this page on 2026-10-02 in five themes, each 21 characters or fewer, so that every kennel name and phrase together come to 36 characters or fewer with the apostrophe and spaces. That is the length the American Kennel Club registers without an additional fee; its limit is 50 characters, with spaces, apostrophes and hyphens counted (https://www.akc.org/register/information/naming-of-dog/, read 2026-10-02). The same rules bar show titles, a few words such as kennel, sire and dam, breed names alone and Roman numerals at the end; no phrase here uses them. Each phrase was searched as a page title of English Wikipedia with and without The, and 10 that are titles of albums, films or other works were cut, among them Hailstones at Halftime, Second Helping, Paid in Full, Ask Me Tomorrow, Butter Wouldn't Melt.
