    Racehorse Name of the day

    How it works

This racehorse name generator joins two words into a name in the racing style. Every name is 18 characters or fewer with the space, the limit in the naming rules for Thoroughbreds of the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada.

    The naming rules

The registry that keeps the American Stud Book does not accept a name of more than 18 letters, and spaces and punctuation marks count as letters. It also refuses names made only of initials and names that end in a horse word such as filly or colt.

    Five kinds of word

The words come in five groups: speed, weather, royalty, luck and wordplay. A press can join any two, so Stormy can meet Biscuit.

    Questions and answers

How long can a racehorse name be?

Eighteen characters at most under the rules of the American Stud Book, with spaces and punctuation marks counted as letters. Every name on this page fits.

Can I use one of these names for a real racehorse?

Only the registry can say; this page is unofficial. It checks each name itself and may refuse any request. It does not accept names now in use, names of grade one stakes winners of the past 50 years, or names with clear commercial significance.

    Are these real racehorse names?

They were written for this page. Every pair was checked against Wikipedia's page titles and its articles and lists of racehorses, and each match cost a word. Those pages do not hold every horse, so a horse with the same name may exist.

What can a racehorse name not end with?

Under the same rules a name may not end in filly, colt, stud, mare, stallion or a similar horse word, and may not end with a number such as 2nd or 3rd, even spelled out.

How this list was compiled: Own list of first words in five groups, each 8 letters or fewer, so that with a second word of 9 letters or fewer and the space every name is 18 characters or fewer. That is the limit in rule 6(F)(1) of the Principal Rules and Requirements of The American Stud Book, kept by The Jockey Club: names of more than 18 letters are not eligible, and spaces and punctuation marks count as letters (https://www.registry.jockeyclub.com/registry.cfm?page=tjcRuleBook, read 2026-10-02). Every pair the two rows can spell was checked by script that day against the titles of the English Wikipedia articles that carry its racehorse infobox and against the text of its List of racehorses, List of leading Thoroughbred racehorses, List of historical horses, the lists of Melbourne Cup and Grand National winners, Kentucky Derby top four finishers and American Horse of the Year (CC BY-SA 4.0). Matches cost a word each: Throne, Express, Duchess, Streak, Squall, Monarch, Golden, Majestic, Star, Baronial. In a second pass every pair was asked as a page title of English Wikipedia, and each pair that is the title of a person, a horse, a ship, a place, a company or a work cost a word too: Flying, Sonic, Turbo, Thunder, Midnight, Summer, Winter, Morning, Royal, Grand, Imperial, Crown and Lucky among the first words, and Arrow, Dynasty, Gale, King, Knight, Queen, Racer, Sunrise, Runner, Charge, Empress, Herald, Squire and Rascal among the second. Those pages do not hold every horse, and the registry checks every name itself. Licence: own work

How this list was compiled: Own list of second words in five groups, each 9 letters or fewer. None ends in filly, colt, stud, mare or stallion, which rule 6(F)(3) of the same rules does not allow at the end of a name. The checks are described under the first words. Licence: own work
