How a brand is read
A brand is read from left to right, from top to bottom and from the outside in. The word in front says how the figure is drawn: a Lazy R lies on its side, and a Rocking R rests on a quarter circle.
Letters, numbers and pictures
Every letter and number here is on the list of characters that Montana's livestock department accepts in a brand, which leaves out G, I and Q. The pictures, such as a spur or an anvil, are old brands too.

Questions and answers
What does Lazy mean in a ranch name?
In a brand, Lazy means the letter or figure lies on its side. A Lazy R is an R turned a quarter turn, and the name is read just as the brand is: Lazy R.
What is a Rocking brand?
A letter that rests on a quarter circle is called rocking, so an R drawn that way is read Rocking R. A letter that hangs from a quarter circle is called swinging.
Are these the names of real ranches?
Some are. A search of Wikipedia's text finds real ranches with some of these names. Only pairs that are the title of a Wikipedia article, and two well-known brands, were dropped. No name was checked against registered brands; the names are for stories and games.

How this list was compiled: Words that say how a figure in a cattle brand is drawn, each with the way it is drawn. Read on 2026-10-02: How to Read Brands, a sheet of the Montana Department of Livestock dated April 2024 (https://liv.mt.gov/_docs/BE/Forms/How-to-read-brands-4-2024.pdf), for Lazy, Reverse, Walking, Rafter, Slash and Quarter Circle; the Handbook of Texas, Cattle Brands (https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/cattle-brands), for Tumbling, Lazy, Running, Walking, Rafter and Rocking; and English Wikipedia, Livestock branding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livestock_branding, CC BY-SA 4.0), for Swinging, Box and the detail of the others. Every mark was searched with every figure as a page title of English Wikipedia, with and without Ranch. Circle, Diamond, Crazy, Flying, Bar were taken out because they spelled the names of real ranches, companies or products with several letters. Licence: own wording; meanings follow the sources named

How this list was compiled: Letters and numbers from the characters the Montana Department of Livestock lists as acceptable in a brand (23 letters, without G, I and Q, and the numbers 2 to 9; https://liv.mt.gov/_docs/BE/Forms/How-to-read-brands-4-2024.pdf, read 2026-10-02), and pictures named as brands in that sheet or in the Handbook of Texas, Cattle Brands (https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/cattle-brands, read 2026-10-02); Rising Sun is the example of a picture brand in English Wikipedia, Livestock branding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livestock_branding, CC BY-SA 4.0). 8, B, F, S, A, J, Y, Heart, T, Fish, Frying Pan were taken out because, with a mark on this page, they spelled the page title of a real ranch or another name on English Wikipedia. W and E were taken out too: Running W is the brand of the King Ranch in Texas (English Wikipedia, King Ranch), and Lazy E is a ranch and rodeo arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma, named in several English Wikipedia articles. A search of Wikipedia's text finds real ranches with other names this page can make; those were left in, because real ranches use brands like these. Names were not checked against any state's registered brands. Licence: own work
