Bêtises de Cambrai French boiled sweets from Cambrai which, the story goes, were first made by accident. Bêtise means a stupid mistake.
Bonfire toffee A hard, brittle treacle toffee made in the UK for Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night.
Butterscotch Brown sugar and butter. Early mentions tie it to Doncaster in Yorkshire, and a recipe was printed in 1848.
Candy apple A whole apple in a hard sugar shell, a treat at Halloween and on Guy Fawkes Night.
Candy cane The peppermint stick of Christmas. A common story starts it in Cologne in 1670; records begin in 1866.
Conversation hearts Small sugar hearts printed with messages for Valentine's Day. Printing sayings on candy began in 1866.
Dalgona Melted sugar and baking soda, pressed flat and stamped with a shape. A South Korean street snack.
Deuk deuk tong A hard Hong Kong maltose candy flavored with ginger and sesame. Deuk is Cantonese for chiselling.
Gobstopper Canadians and Americans call it a jawbreaker. Layers are panned onto a core one by one, which takes several weeks.
Honeycomb toffee Baking soda foams the hot sugar. Also called cinder toffee, sponge toffee, seafoam or hokey pokey.
Hopjes Dutch coffee and caramel sweets from The Hague, named after the 18th-century Baron Hendrik Hop.

Brigadeiro Brazilian balls of condensed milk, cocoa powder and butter, rolled in chocolate sprinkles.
Chocolate coins Foil-covered chocolate discs, given as Hanukkah gelt and hung on Christmas trees.
Chocolate letters In the Netherlands people are given their own initial in chocolate for Sinterklaas in early December.
Chocolate truffles A ganache ball rolled in cocoa powder, named for its likeness to the fungus. First made in Chambéry in 1895.
Dark chocolate Also called plain chocolate. Its share of cocoa is higher than milk chocolate's.
Gianduiotto An ingot-shaped, foil-wrapped chocolate from Turin, made with hazelnut gianduja.
Mendiants French chocolate discs topped with nuts and dried fruit for the four mendicant orders, made at Christmas.
Milk chocolate First made in 1875 by Daniel Peter in Switzerland, and now the most consumed type of chocolate.
Modica chocolate A Sicilian chocolate with protected status, ground by hand and not conched, so it stays grainy.
Mozartkugel Created in Salzburg in 1890 by Paul Fürst: pistachio, marzipan and nougat under dark chocolate.
Peanut butter cups A moulded chocolate cup with a peanut butter filling, among the most popular candies in America.
Ptasie mleczko A Polish chocolate-covered sweet with a marshmallow-like centre. The name means bird's milk.
Rocky road Marshmallows, nuts and dried fruit set in melted chocolate. In Australia it is tied to Christmas.
Szaloncukor Hungarian fondant sweets coated in chocolate, wrapped in shiny foil and hung on the Christmas tree.
White chocolate Cocoa butter, sugar and milk solids, with no non-fat cocoa solids. First sold as a bar in 1936.

Beijinho A Brazilian birthday sweet of condensed milk and coconut, topped with a clove. The name means little kiss.
Bubble gum Walter Diemer made it in Philadelphia in 1928. It is pink because red was the only dye he had to hand.
Candy corn Three-coloured kernels, a Halloween staple in North America since the 1880s, first called Chicken Feed.
Caramels A soft, dense chew made by boiling milk or cream with sugar and butter.
Chewing gum The Maya and the Aztecs chewed chicle. John Colgan of Louisville made the first flavoured gum in the 1860s.
Cocada A traditional coconut sweet found across Latin America, from Mexico to Argentina.
Coconut candy Vietnamese kẹo dừa, made mostly in Bến Tre from coconut milk and coconut cream.
Cotton candy The spinning machine was invented in 1897 by a dentist and a confectioner, and shown in 1904 as Fairy Floss.
Dodol A sticky, chewy Southeast Asian sweet of coconut milk, palm sugar and rice flour, simmered slowly.
Dragon's beard candy A handmade Chinese sweet of fine pulled strands around peanuts, sesame and coconut.
Fudge Sugar, butter and milk cooked to the soft-ball stage. It began in the US in the 19th century.
Krówki Polish milk toffees, crisp outside and runny inside when hand-made. The name means little cows.
Maple taffy Boiled maple sap poured onto snow and lifted with a small wooden stick, a Canadian sugar shack treat.

Tameletjie One of South Africa's oldest sweets: a hard homemade toffee, sometimes with almonds, pine nuts or coconut.
Toffee An English sweet of sugar and butter cooked to the hard crack stage, 149 to 154 °C.

Alegría A Mexican sweet of amaranth seeds and honey, made mainly in Santiago Tulyehualco. The name means joy.
Calisson From Aix-en-Provence: candied melon and ground almonds under a thin layer of royal icing.
Chikki An Indian sweet of nuts set in jaggery. Groundnut chikki is the most common kind.
Gaz A nougat from the Isfahan region of Iran, with pistachios or almonds, rosewater and egg white.
Gozinaki A Georgian sweet of walnuts fried in honey, made for New Year's Eve and Christmas.
Halva A broad family of sweets found from North Africa to South Asia, made with tahini, flour or sunflower seeds.
Jordan almonds Sugar-panned almonds in pastel colours, given as wedding favours, often in fives.
Kaju katli An Indian cashew sweet cut into rhombus shapes, often decorated with silver foil and eaten at Diwali.
Marzipan Sugar and ground almonds, shaped into small animals for New Year and Christmas in some countries.
Paçoca A Brazilian sweet of ground peanuts, sugar and salt from São Paulo, common at the Festa Junina.
Peanut brittle Flat broken pieces of hard sugar candy set with peanuts, usually less than a centimetre thick.
Pralines French pralines are firm: almonds or hazelnuts in caramelised sugar. American ones add pecans and cream.
Turrón A Christmas sweet of honey, sugar, egg white and toasted almonds, known in Jijona, Spain, since the 1400s.

Anis de Flavigny An aniseed in a sugar shell from Flavigny-sur-Ozerain in Burgundy, first made by Benedictine monks.
Aniseed balls A hard, shiny comfit flavoured with aniseed oil, normally built up around a single rapeseed.
Black liquorice Flavoured and coloured with extract from the root of the liquorice plant, Glycyrrhiza glabra.
Liquorice allsorts First made in Sheffield, England. In 1899 a salesman supposedly dropped his samples and mixed them up.
Liquorice comfits Small pieces of liquorice in a coloured sugar shell, sometimes sold as torpedoes.
Liquorice root sticks The dried root itself, chewed as a sweet. In the Netherlands it is sold as zoethout, sweet wood.
Pontefract cakes Small black liquorice discs from Pontefract in West Yorkshire, stamped with an emblem of the castle.
Red liquorice Chewy ropes or tubes shaped like liquorice that contain no liquorice extract.
Salty liquorice Salmiakki: liquorice with ammonium chloride for flavor, common in the Nordic countries and Benelux.

Holidays and celebrations holds 23 candies tied to a date: candy corn and bonfire toffee for Halloween, sugar skulls for the Day of the Dead, chocolate letters for Sinterklaas, barfi and kaju katli for Diwali. Regional sweets holds 62, among them cuberdon from Ghent, gaz from Isfahan and tablet from Scotland. Twenty-seven cards carry a year or a century, from turrón in the 1400s to bubble gum in 1928.

Questions and answers

Are these brands or types of candy?

Types, almost all. Milk chocolate, gummy bears and peanut butter cups appear as kinds of candy, with no bar or bag names. A few regional sweets are made by one firm or protected by name, such as Anis de Flavigny and Ptasie mleczko. Those are written as plain text, and this site has no tie to any maker.

How were the origin stories checked?

We read every line against the candy's own English Wikipedia article on 18 September 2026. Where the article hedges, the card does too: the candy cane's start in Cologne is a common story, and the dropped tray behind liquorice allsorts supposedly happened. Claims missing from the article, such as a birthplace for candy corn, stayed off.

Is Nut and seed sweets an allergy filter?

No. It is our own sorting of candies built around a nut or a seed, such as marzipan, chikki and halva. Candies under every other type can contain nuts, seeds, milk, egg or gluten, and recipes differ between makers. Read the packet, or ask whoever made it.
