All 82 counties, 15 of them with one town

Every county has a city or town, and 15 have only one, such as Natchez in Adams County and Vicksburg in Warren County. The County list holds 80. Issaquena and Benton Counties, whose largest towns are the smallest, are left off it; their towns still come up in a draw from every county.

Towns that sit on a county line

Seventeen places have people in more than one county. Nettleton, Crowder and State Line are split close to half and half, and each card says mostly in the county with the larger share. Hattiesburg is mostly in Forrest County, with about one in seven of its people in Lamar County.

  • Natchez, incorporated in 1803, is the oldest municipality in Mississippi.
  • Gluckstadt, in Madison County, has been a city only since June 2021.
  • Quitman is in Clarke County, not Quitman County, and Prentiss is in Jefferson Davis County, not Prentiss County.

How this list was compiled: All 299 municipalities of Mississippi, each with the county that holds most of its people, its population and its place among the 299. Figures are the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 City and Town Population Totals, the estimates for 1 July 2025 (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/cities/totals/sub-est2025.csv, read 2026-10-09). A place is called a city, a town or a village as that file names it: 113 cities, 167 towns and 19 villages. Places with the same estimate share the higher rank. A card says "mostly in" where under 95 in 100 of the people live in the county named. The 299 names were compared with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_municipalities_in_Mississippi, which has the same 299. The size rule of cities, towns and villages and Natchez's incorporation in 1803 were read in the municipal government chapter of the Mississippi Secretary of State's Blue Book (https://web.archive.org/web/20170126110031/http://www.sos.ms.gov/Education-Publications/Documents/BlueBook/10-2014-Municipal-Government.pdf). Gluckstadt's incorporation in June 2021 was read at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluckstadt,_Mississippi, and the state capital checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_capitals_in_the_United_States the same day.
