A random Texas city generator that reaches 244 counties

Count each place in the county where most of its people live, and 59 counties have places but none of 2,500 people. Each is on the cards through its largest: Valentine, with 61 people, is the only municipality in Jeff Davis County. The County list has room for 80, the ones with the largest cities.

Names that point to the wrong county

Twenty cards are named like a county they are not in. Houston is in Harris County, while the one card of Houston County is Crockett. Austin is in Travis County, Tyler in Smith County and Pecos in Reeves County. Amarillo, the seat of Potter County, says mostly in Randall County, where 52 in 100 of its people live.

  • Fulshear, in Fort Bend County, and Celina, mostly in Collin County, each more than tripled between 2020 and 2025.
  • Dallas and Fort Worth each spread over five counties.

Questions and answers

How many cities are in Texas?

Texas has 1,224 municipalities in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates; the file names 970 of them cities, 232 towns and 22 villages. Forty-four have 100,000 people or more.

Which Texas counties have no cities?

Ten: Borden, Crockett, Glasscock, Jim Hogg, Kenedy, King, Loving, McMullen, Terrell and Zapata Counties have no incorporated place and never come up. Their county seats, such as Ozona in Crockett County, are unincorporated.

Impact, in Taylor County, with 18 people in the 2025 estimates. Los Ybanez in Dawson County has 20 and Quintana in Brazoria County 25. None of the three has a card here.

How this list was compiled: Every incorporated city, town and village of Texas with 2,500 people or more on 1 July 2025 (541), and the largest place of each of the 59 other counties that have one: 600 of the state's 1,224 municipalities, picked by that rule and not by hand. A place is counted in the county that holds most of its people. Each card has that county, the population and the place among all 1,224. Figures are the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 City and Town Population Totals, the estimates for 1 July 2025 (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/cities/totals/sub-est2025.csv, read 2026-10-09). A place is called a city, a town or a village as that file names it. Places with the same estimate share the higher rank. A card says "mostly in" where under 95 in 100 of the people live in the county named. The two cities named Reno carry their county. Pecos and Peñitas are spelt as Wikipedia's list has them; the file writes Town of Pecos and Penitas. Ten counties have no incorporated place and so no card. The 1,224 names were compared with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_municipalities_in_Texas, which has the same 1,224 (it calls Hillcrest Village Hillcrest and Buffalo Springs Lake Buffalo Springs). Amarillo's standing as the seat of Potter County was read at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amarillo,_Texas, Valentine's as the only municipality of Jeff Davis County at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentine,_Texas, Ozona's as an unincorporated county seat at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozona,_Texas, and the state capital checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_capitals_in_the_United_States the same day.
