Random Coordinates Generator: Latitude and Longitude on Demand: how it works

This random coordinates generator returns a latitude and longitude in one press. Draw from the whole globe, from land only, or from a box around one of 165 countries. Each point appears in decimal degrees and in degrees, minutes and seconds, with a link that opens it on a map. Points are spread evenly by area, so they do not crowd the poles.

Three ways to draw a point

Anywhere on Earth treats the globe as one surface, so expect water: oceans cover 70.8% of it. Land only throws away every point that falls in the sea and draws again until one lands on a continent or a large island. By country draws inside the smallest box of latitude and longitude that holds the country. A box is rarely a good fit. About 48% of Brazil's box is Brazil, 78% of Egypt's is Egypt, and only 18% of Japan's is Japan, so a point can fall offshore or over a border.

Reading the two formats

Latitude comes first and runs from -90 at the South Pole to 90 at the North Pole. Longitude runs from -180 to 180, and positive values are north and east. So -33.8678, 151.2100 is south and east: Sydney. The same point in degrees, minutes and seconds is 33°52′4″S 151°12′36″E. Four decimal places pin a point to about 11 metres and two to about 1.1 km.

Why the points do not crowd the poles

Picking latitude evenly between -90 and 90 sounds fair but is not. Lines of longitude squeeze together toward the poles, so a band near 80° holds far less ground than a band at the equator, and even latitudes would pile points into the Arctic and Antarctic. This tool weights latitude by area instead. Half of the planet's surface lies between 30°S and 30°N, and so do about half of the points you will draw.

Tips

  • Geography warm-up: draw a land point, read out only the two numbers, and have the class name the continent before anyone opens the map.
  • Writers and game masters: draw a land point, open the map, and set the scene at the nearest town or river.
  • Testing map code? Pull points from the Russia or Fiji box, which cross the 180° line, and from the southern and western hemispheres, where a dropped minus sign shows up at once.
  • A result of 0, 0 is not a bug. That spot in the Gulf of Guinea, about 600 km off West Africa, is nicknamed Null Island, and broken address data from all over the world lands there.
  • A degree of latitude is about 111 km everywhere, but a degree of longitude shrinks as you leave the equator. At 60° north or south it is half as wide.

Questions and answers

How random are the coordinates?

Each point comes from your browser's random number source, with longitude drawn evenly and latitude weighted so every square kilometre of the globe has the same chance. Nothing is sent to a server, and no point depends on the one before it. It suits games, lessons and test data, not survey-grade sampling.

Why do so many points land in the ocean?

Because most of the planet is ocean. Water covers 70.8% of the surface and land 29.2%, so in Anywhere mode roughly seven points in ten are wet. Switch to Land only, or pick a country, if you want ground under the pin.

How do I convert decimal degrees to degrees, minutes and seconds?

Keep the whole number as degrees. Multiply the decimal part by 60 and keep the whole number as minutes, then multiply what is left by 60 for seconds. For 33.8678: 0.8678 × 60 = 52.068, so 52 minutes, and 0.068 × 60 is about 4 seconds. A negative latitude becomes S and a negative longitude becomes W.

Why did a point for one country land in the sea or next door?

The country list stores a box, not an outline. The box is the smallest rectangle of latitude and longitude that contains the country, and coastlines, islands and odd shapes leave a lot of it empty. Norway fills about 15% of its box and Chile about 25%.

Which countries are included?

165 United Nations member states, each with a box we computed from the public domain Natural Earth map at 1:110 million scale. That map leaves out the smallest states, so places such as Monaco, Malta, Singapore and most small island nations are missing. France's box covers European France only, and overseas territories are not counted anywhere.

Can I open a point on a map?
