Learn the article with the noun
German nouns each have a gender, and the article shows it: der for masculine, die for feminine, das for neuter. Press, say the noun with its article, and the card shows whether you were right.
Drill one gender
After the first press, the list beside the button keeps the draw to der nouns (31), die nouns (25) or das nouns (25). Set the count to 10 for a quick list to copy into a notebook.
Tips
- Say the plural too when you can: das Buch becomes die Bücher, and die is the article for every plural noun.
- Nouns for people often have a female form: der Lehrer is a teacher, and a woman teacher is die Lehrerin.
Questions and answers
How do I know if a German noun is der, die or das?
Mostly by learning each noun with its article. Some endings help: -chen nouns are always neuter. Meaning does not decide it, which is why a girl is das Mädchen.
Why is See not on the list?
It has two genders with two meanings: der See is a lake and die See is the sea. We left it out so every card has one right answer.
Where do the genders and meanings come from?
Each noun was checked against its English Wiktionary entry on 24 September 2026. The meanings are the first senses, so some words, such as der Zug (train, procession, pull), can mean more.
