Guess, then tap

Press Pick 5 new German words. Each card shows the German word alone. Say the meaning, then tap Show meaning: the card gives the English meaning and the part of speech. The Word type list under the button keeps the draw to verbs, adjectives, small words or false friends.

What a verb card adds

A verb card ends with the past participle and the helper verb of the perfect tense: gehen gives gegangen, with sein. Most verbs here take haben. Verbs of movement from place to place or of a change of state, such as kommen and einschlafen, take sein, and some, such as fahren, are given both.

Tips
  • False friends look English and are not: das Gift is poison, bald is soon and fast is almost.
  • Doch, mal and eben are small words with no single English match; the card gives the nearest meanings.

Questions and answers

What are German false friends?

Words that look like an English word and mean something else. Here der Chef is the boss, bekommen is to get, also means so and das Handy is a cell phone. Choose False friends in the Word type list to draw only those.

Why does a verb card say haben or sein?

German builds the perfect tense from a helper verb and the past participle. The card names the helper that the verb's Wiktionary entry prints: sein for movement from one place to another or a change of state, haben for nearly everything else.

Are there German nouns on this page?

Only in the False friends group, where each one carries der, die or das. Everyday nouns with their gender are on the German noun page, and the two lists share no word.

Where do the words and meanings come from?

The choice is ours, from no exam or course list. Every word was then checked by script against its entry on English Wiktionary: the part of speech, the meaning, and each verb's past participle and helper verb.

How this list was compiled: Everyday German words that are not nouns, plus a False friends group in which nouns are allowed. Each word's spelling, part of speech and meaning come from its own entry on English Wiktionary (wikitext read through https://en.wiktionary.org/w/api.php on 2026-09-30, 40 titles to a request, text under CC BY-SA 4.0; the entry's address is in x.src), German section. For every verb the past participle and the auxiliary (haben or sein) are the ones printed on the entry's headword line, read by expanding the entry's own de-verb template through the same API; where the entry gives both auxiliaries the card says so. For the nouns in the False friends group the gender is the one in the entry's de-noun template (Teller and Prospekt are given as masculine, their first gender there). False friends are our own selection of words that look like an English word and mean something else; the German meaning on each card was checked in the entry like every other, and the English look-alike is named after the word 'not'. The list is our own choice of everyday vocabulary and is copied from no exam body's or course's list. The English meanings are our own short wording; a script then checked that a word of each meaning stands in a definition line under the same part-of-speech heading of the entry, and words that failed were left out. Every English meaning was read for a school audience: no slang, insult, swear word, alcohol or adult term. Left out: Brief, Note (Brief is on random-german-noun-generator, and this list shares no word with that page; the entry for Note also gives the plain sense 'note', so it is no clean false friend). After the file was written a script read it back and checked every row against the saved entry text again. Licence: own work
