Random Spanish Word Generator With Meanings and el or la: how it works

Every card from this random Spanish word generator pairs a random word in Spanish with its English meaning, its part of speech, el or la for a noun, and a translated sentence. Five come up per press. The list holds 600 words: 280 nouns, 115 verbs, 105 adjectives and 100 small words such as pero, sin and todavía.

When the ending lies about gender

Most nouns in -o take el and most in -a take la, and the rule-breakers are here. La mano is feminine. El día, el mapa, el problema and el idioma are masculine. El agua, el hambre and el águila are feminine: they take el only because they start with a stressed a, and the adjective stays feminine, as in el agua fría.

What the frequency chips mean

Top 1,000, Top 5,000 and Rarer follow Wiktionary's Spanish frequency list, counted from about 27.4 million words of film and television subtitles. Ser, casa and bueno sit near the top, while cuchara, tenedor and paraguas miss all 10,000 rows. A word is placed by its most common form, and a spelling that is a word of its own counts for that word alone: camino places el camino, not caminar.

Tips

  • Say every noun with its article: la leche, el puente, la nariz. An ending in -e or a consonant gives no clue, so learn the article with the word.
  • Copy the pattern on the card. Tengo plus a noun covers hungry, thirsty, sleepy and afraid: tengo hambre, tengo sed, tengo sueño, tengo miedo.
  • False friends are marked on the cards: largo means long, éxito means success, sano means healthy and la biblioteca is a library.

Questions and answers

Which Spanish is this, Spain or Latin America?

Both. A card says so when regions split: jugo is zumo in Spain, la papa is patata, la computadora is el ordenador, and el coche becomes carro or auto in much of Latin America. Sentences use tú and ustedes, never vosotros.

How were the genders and parts of speech checked?

On 18 September 2026 a script matched every part of speech and noun gender with the word's Spanish entry in English Wiktionary. Where a noun takes either article, the card says so: el bebé and el estudiante can take la, azúcar takes either, sailors say la mar, and the radio set is also el radio.

Is this random word generator Spanish to English only?

Yes. Each card leads with the Spanish word. Press Hide all translations, guess, then tap a card to check. For the other direction, draw an English word on the noun, verb or adjective page, say it in Spanish, then open Show all 600 Spanish words below and search.

How this list was compiled: Words chosen, translated and given an example sentence for this site. The part of speech of all 600 words and the gender of every noun were checked by script against the Spanish entries of English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/, fetched 2026-09-18, text under CC BY-SA 4.0). The three frequency chips come from Wiktionary's Spanish frequency list, counted from about 27.4 million words of film and television subtitles (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Frequency_lists/Spanish/Subtitles10K, fetched 2026-09-18): Top 1,000 means the word or one of its forms ranks 1 to 1,000 there, Top 5,000 means it ranks 1,001 to 5,000, and Rarer means it ranks lower or is not among the 10,000 listed. A row of that list counts for a word when its spelling is the word itself or when the list files it under that word alone. A row filed under two words counts only for the one spelled that way, so camino (rank 309) places el camino and not caminar, which is placed by its own row at 1,441. By that rule, re-run on 2026-09-19 against the ten pages of the list, eight verbs moved from Top 1,000 to Top 5,000 (bajar, caminar, contar, cuidar, preguntar, probar, soñar, viajar), dibujar and prestar moved from Top 5,000 to Rarer, and el tomate moved to Rarer: tomate is row 5,868, and row 3,813 (tómate, which the list files under tomar and tomate) is tomar plus te. La sal is the one word placed by hand: its only row (sal, rank 737) is shared with the command sal of salir and the count cannot be split, so it sits one band lower, in Top 5,000. The gender rules in the copy were checked on 2026-09-18 against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_gender_in_Spanish and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_determiners. For every sense of a word, look it up in the Real Academia dictionary at https://dle.rae.es, which our checker could not fetch, so no check against it is claimed. Meanings, notes and sentences are our own wording; regional words are marked where we know them. La radio carries a note because Wiktionary gives the radio set as masculine or feminine and the broadcast as feminine (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/radio#Spanish, checked 2026-09-19). First review 2026-09-18 by the list's writer. Second dated pass, 2026-09-19: the site's two content reviewers recomputed all 600 frequency chips from the list, compared the gender of 95 of the 280 nouns with Wiktionary again and read the list for safety, and the words family fixer re-placed the twelve words above, added the note to la radio and replaced one example sentence.
