How it works

This random letter generator picks one of the 26 letters of the alphabet, from A to Z, at random. Each card shows the capital and the small letter, where it sits in the alphabet and how common it is in English.

Pick a random letter for a game

Press once for the letter everyone plays on: name an animal, a city or a food that starts with it. Set the count to 2 or 3 for a letter pair or a set of initials. No letter comes back until all 26 have had a turn.

Vowels or consonants only

After the first press, the list beside the button keeps the draw to the 5 vowels (A, E, I, O, U) or the 21 consonants. That is handy for letter tiles, phonics practice or a word game that needs a vowel.

Tips

For a fair game, skip Q, X and Z: together they make up well under 1% of the letters in English text.

Questions and answers

Is a letter randomizer really random?

Each letter the filters allow has the same chance, so Z comes up as often as E. The picker then holds a letter back until the others have had a turn, so a round of 26 presses shows every letter once.

Are W and Y vowels?

They can act as both. The English alphabet has 5 vowel letters and 19 consonants, and W and Y can stand for either sound, as Y does in "gym". Here they sit with the consonants.

Why is E the most common letter?

E makes up about 12.7% of the letters in English text, ahead of T at 9.1% and A at 8.2%. Z is the rarest at about 0.07%. Each card gives the letter's rank from those counts.
