One sound, three spellings
English writes this sound with J in jam, with G before e, i or y in giant and gym, and with ge or dge at the end of page and badge. Not every such G is soft: in "Gus got a gift, but Gemma got a giant ginger gem." gift keeps a hard G, and only the four soft G words are listed under it.
J against Ch
J and Ch are made the same way: the tongue stops the air just behind the gum ridge, then lets it out with a hiss. The voice is on for J and off for Ch. "Cheap jeep, choke joke, chest jest, chunk junk." swaps one for the other four times.
- Say the pairs as single words first: cheap, jeep, choke, joke.
Questions and answers
What is a good letter J tongue twister?
Try "Jonah juggled jars of jam and jugs of juice." or "Jasper the jaguar jumped the jungle's jumbled junk." For a tongue twister where letter J words meet Ch words, say "Jill chilled the cherry jelly in a chipped jug."
Is soft G the same sound as J?
Yes. Giant, gem and gym start with the same sound as jam. G is usually soft before e, i or y, but get, give and gift keep a hard G. The line under each soft G twister lists only the soft ones.
What words end in the J sound?
Words spelled with ge or dge at the end: page, stage, huge, large, badge, bridge, fudge and hedge. "Trudge past the hedge, then nudge the wedge under the bridge." ends five words with it.
