Press the button and five stage musicals appear, each with its opening year, its composer and lyricist, and one song to look up. The list holds 260 shows, from Little Johnny Jones in 1904 to the Best Musical winner of 2026. Two rows of chips combine: a decade, then Best Musical winners or Opened in London.

Three ways to use a draw

Listening: set the count to 1, play the named song and, if it holds you, the whole cast recording. Quiz: read out the song and the writers and let the room name the show. Drama class: each student draws one show and works out what the singer of that song wants.

What the year, the credit and Tony mean

A theatre credit names the composer first and the lyricist second; 'Music and lyrics' before a name means one writer or team did both. The year is the first full run in New York or London. A concept album, a tryout in Chicago or an earlier opening in Paris or Seoul does not count, so a few years are later than the ones fans quote. 'Tony' and a year mark a Best Musical winner. Opened in London holds 41 shows, 13 of them from the 1980s and 1990s. Last checked 18 September 2026.

Questions and answers

Which musicals have won the Tony Award for Best Musical?

The award was first given in 1949, to Kiss Me, Kate, and 78 shows had won it by 2026; in 1960 Fiorello! and The Sound of Music shared it. The Best Musical winners chip holds 74. The four missing are revues and dance shows built on older songs. The delayed 2020 awards were handed out in September 2021, so that winner is marked Tony 2021.

Are film musicals included?

No. Every entry is a stage show. A stage version of a film is listed under the year it opened on stage in New York or London, with the stage writers' credit.

Are these musicals suitable for children?

Every title and song here is clean to read aloud, and shows with titles unfit for a classroom are left out. The shows themselves vary from family entertainment to stories of war, crime and adult relationships. Before a family watches one or a school stages one, check the show's content guidance.
