Random horror movie, by kind or decade

Press Pick 3 new horror movies; each card gives year, rating, running time and one line on the premise. To keep a film, take the others away with the × at the end of their rows: the next press fills the gaps and leaves what you kept. The rating menu ends in More filters, which opens Kind (Ghosts and hauntings, Vampires, Zombies, Monsters and creatures, Slasher, Science fiction horror, Comedy horror, Psychological, Supernatural and occult) and Decade.

Ratings on this list

23 of the films are rated G or PG, 46 PG-13 and 157 R; 70 say Not rated. A rating is printed only where the Motion Picture Association's database lists that exact film. Not rated means it lists none, which is common for films made before November 1968 or outside the United States, and is no measure of how strong a film is.

  • Jaws and Poltergeist are PG because PG-13 did not exist until July 1984.

Questions and answers

Is this a random scary movie generator too?

Yes. A scary movie and a horror film are one list here. Every film is on it because its own encyclopedia article calls it horror in its opening or files it under a horror category, from silent classics to this decade.

Does it work as a random horror movie name generator?

It deals the names of real films, never made-up titles. Each card gives the title with its year and running time, so the name is one you can look up.

Where are the R-rated horror films?

Behind the rating menu. The page opens on No R-rated or unrated films; choose R, Not rated or Every film there to bring them in. No film rated NC-17 is listed, and no series has more than five films.

Which horror films here have no rating?

Seventy. Forty-five date from before 1968, the year the rating system began on November 1, and 19 of the other 25 were made wholly or partly outside the United States. Not rated means only that the database lists no rating.

How this list was compiled: List chosen and every premise line written for this site on 2026-10-01; nothing is copied from another site's list or wording. Membership rule: a feature film (over 40 minutes) whose own English Wikipedia article calls it a horror film in its opening sentence, or files it under a category of horror films. Wikipedia's lists of horror films by decade and year (index: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_horror_films) were not used as a source of facts. Left out on purpose: any film whose entry in the rating database is NC-17 or X, films whose notoriety rests on sexual violence, and more than five films of one series. The list holds 296 films from 1920 to 2025. Title, year, country and running time come from each film's own article, read through the Wikipedia API on 2026-10-01 (the address is kept on every card as x.src): the year is the one in the article's opening sentence, the minutes are the infobox running time (for the one film whose infobox lists several cuts, the original cut), and the country is left off the card of a film made by three or more countries (all are kept in x.countries). The kind follows the wording of the article's opening and its categories; five films fit none of the nine kinds and carry none; two sequels take the kind of the first film of their series. Each premise line is ours, written from the opening section of the article, and a script then checked that the names and years in it stand in that text. Where an article's opening gives no plot, the line gives a fact about the film instead. Ratings were looked up one title at a time on 2026-10-01 in the Motion Picture Association's database at https://www.filmratings.com/ . A rating is given only where the database has an entry for this exact film: same title or listed alternate title, rated from one year before to two years after release, or a later entry for this same film (a re-issue, a re-rating, or a later American release listed with the film's original title); an entry for another film of the same or a similar name is not used; the certificate number and the year rated are kept in x.cert and x.rated. One film (It, 2017) carries the R stated in its Wikipedia article, because the database search does not take a two-letter title. One 1971 re-issue was published as GP, the earlier name of PG, and is shown as PG. Not rated means only that the database has no entry for the film; it says nothing about how strong the film is. 23 films are rated G or PG, 46 PG-13, 157 R, and 70 have no entry. The page opens on the G, PG and PG-13 films. That the rating system began on 1 November 1968 and that PG-13 was introduced on 1 July 1984 are from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_Picture_Association_film_rating_system , read 2026-10-01. G, PG, PG-13 and R are the Motion Picture Association's marks, reported as published; this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Motion Picture Association. 136 of these films are also on the horror movie wheel of a sister site, with the same title and year; every premise line here is worded differently from that wheel's line for the film. The list is reviewed every 12 months. Licence: own work
