Random Song Generator With Artist, Year and Claim to Fame
One press deals five songs that won a Grammy, topped a year's chart or entered the national registry.
How it works
This random song generator draws only songs that earned a place by a fact: a Grammy for Record or Song of the Year, a Billboard year-end number one, a record run at the top, or the National Recording Registry.

Give me a random song, or a short list
Press Pick 5 new songs and five random songs appear, each with its artist, year and genre. Lock the ones you want, then press again to swap the rest. To narrow the draw, choose a decade in the Any decade menu, or open More filters for Genre and On the list for.
How a song earns its place
Four rules, and no opinions. A song won Record of the Year or Song of the Year at the Grammys, topped Billboard's year-end singles chart, had one of the longest runs at number one on the Hot 100, or sits in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. Titles with swearing or drink and drug words are left out.
Tips
Titles and act names were read for clean language; the words sung were not, so listen before a class does.
Guess-the-artist round: cover the lines with Hide all artists and uncover one at a time.
Moon River and Tom Dooley appear twice, once for each act that earned a place.
Questions and answers
What song should I listen to?
Press the button and take the first card. Every draw is a song with a record behind it, from a 1908 recording to this decade's chart leaders, so even an unfamiliar title has a reason to be heard once.
Can it draw a random pop song?
Yes. Open More filters and choose Pop under Genre. The genre is the first one the song's Wikipedia article lists, so a soft rock ballad sits under Rock. Country, Soul and R&B, Hip-hop, Dance and disco, Folk, and Jazz and blues work the same way.
Can I get 100 random songs, or a random list of songs to copy?
One press gives five, and Copy the list and Print sit under the cards. The full list is under the tool, grouped by reason. For random popular songs only, choose Chart records under On the list for.
Why is a song I love not on the list?
The list has no favorites, ours or anyone's. A song is here for a Grammy, a chart record or a registry place, and for nothing else. Many famous songs have none of the three.

How this list was compiled: Every song is on the list for a fact that can be looked up, not for anyone's taste and not from any magazine's ranking. The facts were read on 2026-09-30 from these English Wikipedia pages, and each row was compared with the fetched text again by script after this file was written. Four rules, applied in this order: (1) the song won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year or for Song of the Year (the winners' rows of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Record_of_the_Year and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Song_of_the_Year , 1959 to 2026 ceremonies); (2) it was Billboard's year-end number-one single, 1946 to 2025 (the Pop single column of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Year-End_number-one_singles_and_albums ; the Hot 100 itself began in 1958); (3) it is in the table of the most weeks at number one on the Hot 100 at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Hot_100_chart_achievements_and_milestones (14 weeks or more on the day it was read; no week count is printed here because a running song's count moves); (4) it is a single song with its own Wikipedia article in the table of the United States National Recording Registry at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Recording_Registry (albums, speeches, broadcasts and collections are left out; the year printed after the registry is the year it was added). All four rules were readable that day. The list holds 365 songs: 100 carry a Grammy, 86 a chart fact and 198 a registry place, and a song can carry more than one. The act is the one the award, chart or registry row names. The year is the release year in the infobox for that act's recording on the song's own Wikipedia article (each article read through the Wikipedia API on 2026-09-30); where the article has no entry for that recording, the year is the registry's release year or the chart year, and three award winners whose release year the article does not give for that act print no year. The genre is the first one that infobox lists, and a song whose article gives none prints none; no mood is printed, because a mood would be our opinion. A song recorded by two acts that are both on the list appears once for each, with the act in brackets after the second. Left out on purpose, because children use this site: titles with a swear word or a reference to drink, drugs or sex (eight titles, among them one Record of the Year winner of 2008 and one of 2023), and registry entries that are not songs (a recited poem, an operetta number, a ride's theme, a start-up sound and a drum break). Titles and act names were read by a person; lyrics were not vetted. At most five songs by one act: no act reached the limit. No lyrics, no recordings and no links to players are given. Grammy and the award names are marks of the Recording Academy, Billboard and Hot 100 are marks of Billboard, and the National Recording Registry is a program of the Library of Congress; they are named as facts, and this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them. The earliest recording on the list is from 1908 and the latest from 2025, counted from the dataset. Review interval 12 months. Licence: own work
