No name was chosen because it is a car make, a model, a trim name, a film or TV car or a franchise character, and three checks took out the ones that turned out to be one. First, on 2026-09-18 every name was checked by script against two public make and model lists, https://github.com/matthlavacka/car-list (car-list.json) and https://github.com/abhionlyone/us-car-models-data (US models for 1992 to 2026, commit 79018e2): 79 makes and 2,041 models in all. A name was dropped if it equals a make or a model, or if it contains a whole word that is a make or a one-word model name; that removed names such as Sugar Cube, Golf Ball and Arctic Fox. Second, the rest were checked against a hand-kept list of 421 older and foreign makes and models, motorcycles, trim names, film cars and franchise characters. Third, on 2026-09-19 a second reader went through all 923 lines then in the list for sense, safety, repeated ideas and model names, and looked every name up on English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/ , read 2026-09-19) under the article titles 'Name (automobile)', '(car)', '(marque)', '(vehicle)', '(motorcycle)', '(truck)' and '(automobile company)'. That pass removed 22 names. Model, body-style or trim names: Turbo, Rex (Subaru), Wasp and Jet (Hudson), Night Train (Harley-Davidson), Tiara (Toyopet), Kitten (Reliant), Blizzard (Toyota), Vixen (TVR), Sapphire (Armstrong Siddeley), Sidewinder (Dodge), Drifter (Mazda), Sparrow (Corbin), Luna (Kinetic), Convoy (LDV), Trophy (Triumph, and a Renault trim), Apex (a Toyota trim) and Starlight (Studebaker). Makes that traded after 1960: Red Flag (what Hongqi means), Maple (Shanghai Maple) and Hercules (motorcycles). A car that is a children's book character: Gumdrop. An ordinary word stays when its only vehicle match on Wikipedia is a small, long-closed make (Covert 1901 to 1907, Walter 1902 to 1906, Achilles 1903 to 1908, Iris 1906 to 1925, Ruby cyclecars of the 1910s and 1920s, Badger 1910 to 1911, Tiny 1912 to 1915, Greyhound cyclecars of 1914, Ajax motorcycles 1923 to 1924, Flint 1923 to 1927, Gnome 1925 to 1926, Mars motorcycles to 1958, Troll 1956 to 1958), a single racing or record car (Heron, Nemesis) or an everyday motoring word (Lemon, Sleeper, Burnout, Bumper, Bulldozer, Juggernaut, Digger). Plain color words that have also been model names outside the US, Cherry and Indigo, are kept as colors.
