Does it make double names like Mary Beth or Billy Ray?

How this list was compiled: A list by a written rule, computed on 3 October 2026 from the Social Security Administration's file of first names by state (namesbystate.zip, linked from https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/limits.html, births of 1910 to 2025 in the 50 states and the District of Columbia; ssa.gov refuses scripted downloads, so the official zip was read from the Internet Archive's copy captured 2026-09-27, https://web.archive.org/web/20260927185641/https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/state/namesbystate.zip, 24,383,479 bytes). The South is the Census Bureau's South region: Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas (https://www2.census.gov/geo/pdfs/maps-data/maps/reference/us_regdiv.pdf, read the same day). Those 17 hold 35.1 in every 100 births in the file. A name is listed for girls, or for boys, when the file holds at least 2,000 births of it for that sex, that sex has more of its births than the other, and at least 65 in every 100 of those births were in the South. That leaves 417 names: 229 for girls and 188 for boys. The record's placeholder entries (Infant, Unknown) are left out, and so is one name that is also a crude word. The share on a card is the South's share of the name's births in the file, rounded to a whole number; a card prints 100 only when every birth on record was in the South. Best decade is the decade with the most births of the name in the South; the 2020s hold six years so far. Best state rank is the name's best place among its sex's names in any of the 17, by all births of 1910 to 2025, with the state. A state file lists a name only in a year when at least 5 babies of that sex got it in that state, so a name spread thin over many states is undercounted next to one gathered in a few. Every spelling counts as its own name. The list says where a name was given; it says nothing about any person or family. Double names such as Mary Beth are not listed as pairs: the file counts the first-name field of the Social Security card application with hyphens and spaces taken out, so a double first name is filed run together, and it counts no middle names (https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/background.html). Licence: Public domain: the file is a work of the US federal government, which copyright does not cover (17 U.S.C. 105). The rule, the shares and the state ranks are our own work.
