Nickname generator from name: start with your first letter
There is no box to type in. Open More filters in the menu under the button and choose the first letter of your name under Starts with: the cards show full names with that letter and their short forms. Some add how an odd one came about, as Peggy came from Maggie.
Nicknames for a habit, and fond names
The same menu switches the kind. For a habit or a skill deals names such as Ace, Doc and Bookworm, each with what it is given for. Fond names is the cute nickname generator of the page: Kiddo, Peanut, Sunshine.
Tips
It works as a nickname generator for girls and for boys: each short-form card says which the full name is.
On a card the short forms run from the most registered on US birth records to the least.
Questions and answers
Where do nicknames like Peggy and Bob come from?
Peggy is an alteration of Maggie, itself from Margaret, and Bob probably began as a medieval pet form of Rob, by the dictionary's account. Cards for odd forms like these carry the line the dictionary gives.
Can it make a nickname from my own name?
Not by typing: the page has no box for a name. Choose your first letter under Starts with to see the short forms of real names that begin with it. A name with fewer than two listed short forms has no card.
What are some cool nicknames?
The habit group holds the kind given for what someone does: Ace for the one who wins, Scout for the one who runs ahead, Night Owl for the one awake at bedtime. Each card says what the name is given for.
Are the short forms real?
Yes. Every short form on a card has an entry in English Wiktionary's lists of diminutives of given names, and that entry names the full name it comes from. The habit nicknames and fond names are our own list.

How this list was compiled: Three groups, built on 2 October 2026. Short forms of given names: every form comes from English Wiktionary's lists 'English diminutives of male given names' and 'English diminutives of female given names' (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:English_diminutives_of_male_given_names and https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:English_diminutives_of_female_given_names, 1,212 entries read 2 October 2026). A form is tied to a full name only where the form's own entry names that full name as the name it is short for: in the entry's given-name line, in a 'diminutive of', 'pet form of', 'short for' or 'clipping of' line, in a definition that says so in words, or in the first line of its etymology. Where the entry gives the form to girls and to boys on separate lines, each line's names are kept apart, so a form stands only on the card of a full name of the same sex. A list of other spellings is not read as a list of short forms, and no form is passed on through another form. A full name has a card when at least two such forms are left and the Social Security national file of first names (public domain, read from the Internet Archive copy of 2026-09-18) records it for at least 1,000 births, which also decides whether the card calls it a girls' name, a boys' name or both (four in five births or more make it one or the other). The same file orders the forms on a card, the form with the most registered births first; a card's title shows up to four and the line under it up to six more. 12 cards carry one more line on how an odd form came about: the first sentence of that form's etymology in its entry, printed only where it reads cleanly. Left out by hand, 62 forms in the two lists: forms that are also crude words or insults (the dictionary's own labels were read for every form, in its capital and its small-letter entry), forms it marks as a slur or as derogatory for a people or a faith, and forms whose entry gives them as the nickname of one living person or whose spelling is also a toy or car brand. A common name with a rare slang sense stays (Charlie, Jack, Bob). Nicknames for a habit or a skill (121) and fond names (77): our own list, written for this page on 2 October 2026; each says what the name is given for. None is about a people, a faith, a body or a disability, and the fond names are for family and friends. 547 cards in all. The birth counts used for the order are from a public-domain file of the US federal government. The habit nicknames, the fond names and their lines are our own work.
