Questions and answers

What are the four elementals?

In the writings of the alchemist Paracelsus and his followers they are gnomes, undines, sylphs and salamanders, one for each of earth, water, air and fire. This page adds ice and lightning as groups of their own.

How is an elemental name made here?

A real root word plus an ending we chose. Latin unda, wave, gives Undarel, and Old Norse íss, ice, gives Issvald. The ending carries no meaning.

Can I use these names in a game or a book?

We made them up for this page, for stories and games. A script checked each against Wikipedia titles and the page titles of twenty-four fan wikis and dropped it on a match. Trade marks were not searched.

How this list was compiled: Own list of 150 invented names for elemental spirits, 25 for each of six elements: fire, water, earth, air, ice and lightning. Each name is grown from a real word for its element, and the card names that word, its language and its meaning: 116 words of Latin, Ancient Greek, Old Norse, Old English, Welsh, Irish, Finnish, Lithuanian and Hawaiian. Each word was looked up in English Wiktionary on 2 October 2026 and a script checked the printed meaning against the section of the entry for that language; words whose entry did not bear the meaning out were left out with their names. Greek words are written in Latin letters. Every invented name was screened by script on 2 October 2026 and dropped on any hit: a US English dictionary; the US Census Bureau's list of last names and the Social Security Administration's list of first names; GeoNames places (https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/, CC BY 4.0); every other list on this site and every name the rows of a sibling page can spell; an exact English Wikipedia page title; the page titles of 16 fantasy fan wikis saved that day (a title word spelled the same, or for a name of six letters or more one letter away) and an exact page title on eight more fan wikis of games and films; a list of famous fantasy names; and a rude-word list read inside the name (https://github.com/LDNOOBW/List-of-Dirty-Naughty-Obscene-and-Otherwise-Bad-Words, with our own additions).
