Space Station Name Generator

One press names a space station, puts it in a real orbit and says what it is for.

Gardener's Waystation, in medium Earth orbit. It exists to serve the best noodles in orbit.

    Space Station of the day

    How it works

This space station name generator makes up a station for a story or a game: a name and kind, such as Good Faith Station, one of the real places a station can orbit, and the reason it exists.

    Read the full guide

    Name it, then place it

Press New space station. Tap a part to lock it, then press again. Lock the orbit to put a whole fleet of stations in one place, or lock the name and press until its purpose fits.

    The orbits are real

In a geostationary orbit, 35,786 km above the equator, a station appears motionless in the sky. In a polar orbit it passes above or nearly above both poles on each revolution. A halo orbit goes around a Lagrange point, which is just a point in empty space. The list under the tool explains every orbit.

    Questions and answers

What is a good name for a space station?

This page joins a name to a kind of station: Lantern Reach Ring, Watchkeeper's Waystation, Two Lanterns Outpost. The names are virtues, harbors and waymarks, crew roles and numbers.

Where can a space station orbit?

The list has low Earth orbit, where most artificial objects in outer space are, geostationary orbit, lunar orbit, orbits around and near the Lagrange points, an orbit over Mars and heliocentric orbit, which is an orbit around the Sun.

    What is a Lagrange point?

Lagrange points are points of equilibrium for small objects under the gravity of two massive orbiting bodies. Near L4 and L5, about 60 degrees ahead of and behind the smaller body, trojan asteroids stay in stable orbits.

Are these the names of real or fictional space stations?

No. A name and kind that matched a Wikipedia page title or a page on a science-fiction fan wiki was taken out. No list is complete, so search a name before you publish it.

How this list was compiled: Our own list of 106 names, written on 2026-10-03. Every name the first two rows can spell was searched by script that day as an English Wikipedia page title (https://en.wikipedia.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0), which holds the lists of real and of fictional space stations, and as a page title on 24 science-fiction fan wikis (memory-alpha.fandom.com, starwars.fandom.com, tardis.fandom.com, masseffect.fandom.com, dune.fandom.com, stargate.fandom.com, marvel.fandom.com, dc.fandom.com, warhammer40k.fandom.com, halo.fandom.com, expanse.fandom.com, babylon5.fandom.com, firefly.fandom.com, starcraft.fandom.com, farscape.fandom.com, theculture.fandom.com, honorverse.fandom.com, battlestargalactica.fandom.com, aliens.fandom.com, destiny.fandom.com, nomanssky.fandom.com, stellaris.fandom.com, foundation.fandom.com, cowboybebop.fandom.com); the name behind each match was taken out. 59 candidates were cut (54 on another list of this site; 3 a Wikipedia page title; 2 a real place), among them Patience, Cook's, Four Winds, Candor, Diligence, Forbearance; High Anchorage and Soft Docking went later, because each repeats a word of the Kind row (Anchorage, Dock). Orbit: all 18 orbits

    A 11

    • a distant retrograde orbit A highly stable orbit around the smaller of two bodies, flown against the direction in which that moon orbits its planet.
    • a halo orbit A periodic orbit around one of the L1, L2 or L3 Lagrange points, each of which is just a point in empty space.
    • a Lissajous orbit A path around a Lagrange point that an object can follow with minimal propulsion.

    A, continued

    • a Molniya orbit A highly elliptical orbit designed for coverage of high latitudes, with a period of about half a sidereal day.
    • a near-rectilinear halo orbit A halo orbit that passes close to the smaller of two bodies and is nearly stable.
    • a polar orbit Passes above or nearly above both poles of the body it circles on each revolution.
    • a stable orbit near the L4 point L4 is the Lagrange point about 60 degrees ahead of the smaller body; trojan asteroids stay in stable orbits there.
    • a stable orbit near the L5 point L5 is the Lagrange point that trails the smaller body by about 60 degrees.
    • a Sun-synchronous orbit A nearly polar orbit that passes over any given point at the same local mean solar time.
    • a Tundra orbit A highly elliptical geosynchronous orbit; a satellite in it spends most of its time over one chosen area of the Earth.
    • areostationary orbit The Mars version of a geostationary orbit, about 17,032 km above the equator of Mars.

    G 2

    • geostationary orbit A circular orbit 35,786 km above the equator; from the ground, a station here appears motionless in the sky.
    • geosynchronous orbit An orbit whose period matches Earth's rotation: 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds.

    H 2

    • heliocentric orbit An orbit around the Sun.
    • high Earth orbit An orbit whose farthest point lies beyond geosynchronous orbit, 35,786 km from Earth.

    L 2

    • low Earth orbit An orbit around Earth with a period of 128 minutes or less; most artificial objects in outer space are here.
    • lunar orbit An orbit around Earth's Moon.

    M 1

    • medium Earth orbit Above low Earth orbit and below high Earth orbit: between 2,000 and 35,786 km above sea level.
