    Airship of the day

    How it works

This airship name generator pairs a word of weather or height with a bird, a cloud or a light, then adds a kind of airship: one of five real kinds or a story kind such as a sky galleon.

    Name, then kind

Press New airship name. You get a line such as "The Lofty Thistledown, a mail packet". Tap a part to lock it, then press again: keep the kind and press for a whole fleet of them, or keep Cloudborne and try second words until one sounds right.

    Real kinds and story kinds

Five kinds are real and carry a checked line: rigid airship, semi-rigid airship, blimp, hybrid airship and thermal airship. The rest, from mail packet to lamp ship, are story kinds, and each line says so.

    Questions and answers

What are the main types of airship?

Non-rigid, semi-rigid and rigid. A non-rigid airship, or blimp, is held in shape by gas pressure alone; a semi-rigid one adds a stiff keel; a rigid airship has a full framework with the gas in cells inside.

What are some fantasy airship names?

Names from this page include The Drifting Meridian, The Thunderous Gossamer and The Skyward Barometer. Lock the kind on sky galleon, mail packet or aerial yacht for a ship that belongs in a made-up world.

    Is a blimp an airship?

Yes. A blimp is a non-rigid airship: it has no internal frame and no keel, and the pressure of its lifting gas keeps its shape.

Are these the names of real airships?

No. Each pair of words was checked against Wikipedia's lists of Zeppelins, British airships and US Navy airships, and against ship names on fan wikis of games and stories with airships; a match was cut.

Every first word was paired with every second word by script, and each pair was checked that day as an English Wikipedia page title with and without "The" (https://en.wikipedia.org/, CC BY-SA 4.0), against the names in the English Wikipedia articles Airship, Zeppelin, Blimp, List of Zeppelins, List of British airships and List of airships of the United States Navy, against pairs on every list of this site, against the ship and airship lists of seven fan wikis of games and stories with airships, and against exact page titles on 4 of those wikis (finalfantasy.fandom.com, skiesofarcadia.fandom.com, eberron.fandom.com, bioshock.fandom.com). 2 candidates were cut (2 a Wikipedia page title), among them Azure, Luminous. How this list was compiled: Our own list of 40 second words: birds of the open sky, clouds, winds and lights, written on 2026-10-03. Screened with the first words (see that list); a word that is the name of a ship in the ship lists of the fan wikis read, or of a real airship in the Wikipedia lists read, was cut. 6 candidates were cut (3 other reasons; 2 a name from published fiction, or one letter from it; 1 a rude word inside or across the join), among them Dandelion, Nightjar, Condor, Zephyr, Albatross, Dragonfly. Kind of airship: all 14 kinds of airship

    Real classes 5

    • blimp A non-rigid airship: no frame and no keel, so the pressure of the lifting gas alone holds its shape.
    • hybrid airship Gets part of its lift from lighter-than-air gas and the rest as an aircraft does.
    • rigid airship Keeps its shape with an internal framework; the lifting gas sits in cells inside it.
Show all 14 kinds of airship (11 more)

    Real classes, continued

    • semi-rigid airship Has a stiff keel or truss under an envelope that gas pressure keeps in shape.
    • thermal airship Gets its lift from heated air, as a hot air balloon does, and can be steered.

    Story kinds 9

    • aerial yacht A story kind, not a real class of airship: a private pleasure craft for one family and its crew.
    • cargo hauler A story kind, not a real class of airship: broad and slow, with a hold as long as a street.
    • chart ship A story kind, not a real class of airship: slow and steady, with map tables and long lenses.
    • cloud ferry A story kind, not a real class of airship: it carries passengers across one valley all day.
    • lamp ship A story kind, not a real class of airship: it hangs in one place as a lighthouse for the others.
    • mail packet A story kind, named after the packet boats that carried mail by water: small and fast, it carries the post between towns.
    • signal tender A story kind, not a real class of airship: it relays flags and lamps between far ships.
    • sky galleon A story kind, not a real class of airship: a tall wooden hull slung under the gas bag.
    • weather ship A story kind, named after the weather ships once stationed at sea: it follows storms and sends word ahead.

How this list was compiled: 14 kinds of airship. Five are real, and their lines follow the opening of the English Wikipedia article on each (rigid airship, semi-rigid airship, blimp, hybrid airship, thermal airship), read on 2026-10-03, CC BY-SA 4.0. The others are story kinds, not real classes of airship, and each line says so; mail packet and weather ship take their names from real vessels (English Wikipedia, Packet boat and Weather ship, read on 2026-10-03).
