How it works
This Australian name generator draws five first names per press from 117 that charted in New South Wales between 1952 and 2025: names that reached first or second place, and names no other list here held when it was built.

Names that charted in Australia
77 cards are names the registry's top 100 lists hold and this site's other name lists did not when this one was built: Leanne, Narelle and Bronwyn did best before 1970, Jarrod, Tayla and Jye later. The other 40 reached first or second place in some year: Jessica was first in 15 years and Kylie second from 1971 to 1974.
Narrow by years
Use the menu under the button for girls' or boys' names, and More filters for the years a name did best: before 1980, 1980 to 1999, or 2000 on. A card gives the best place, its year, and the years the name spent in the top 100.
Tips
- The registry's open data lists first names only, so this page has no surnames.
- Kerry charted for girls and for boys, and its card gives both.
Questions and answers
What are some Australian names?
Leanne, Belinda, Kristy, Narelle, Bronwyn, Garry, Graeme and Jarrod all spent years in New South Wales's top 100 and were on none of this site's other name lists when this one was built. Kylie reached second place in 1971 and Lachlan in 2005.
What are the most popular names in Australia?
In New South Wales in 2025 the three most registered boys' names were Noah, Oliver and Theodore, and the three most registered girls' names Charlotte, Amelia and Olivia. Other states keep their own lists.
Are these real Australian names?
Yes. Every name is in the New South Wales Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages' open data of the 100 most registered names for each year from 1952 to 2025, read on 2 October 2026. It is one state's register, not a count for Australia.
Does it make Australian last names?
No. The registry's open data holds first names only, so every card is a first name.
